I like the Oasis too because sometimes it takes me several tries to turn the page using the swipe thing. And by then I have sauced my Kindle with garlic sauce . . . which isn't something I'd recommend in public transportation.

When I started thinning out my personal library and that of my sister who had passed unexpectedly, I made a Little Free Library (basically a little house structure which contains books for give-away) and put in my front yard. Its been there for 2 years now and it gets quite a bit of traffic. The neighbors, their kids . . . browse for books and they donate too.

Did you see the Kindle Fire Reader's Edition? I dont know the price of it because theyre advertising it with a leather cover and a year's subscription of Kindle UNLIMITED. It has this blue light thing.

I judge a book based on reader reviews and especially valuable to me is the few pages of sample writing that Amazon posts on most books. A 99 cent price is not an incentive at all. (Although I don't think Amazon provides sample writing on short stories.)

Then this is an Amazon issue; I thought you were using the app on another platform like an Android or Apple device (other than Kindle.) Their servers could be acting up.

I had a problem similar to that. I was getting the message on my Windows machine but when I went to my Mac, it worked. It might be the Goodreads app on your Kindle thats wonky. Have you tried deleting and then reinstalling Goodreads?

Had no idea eBook pricing was like that in Japan. Here, in the U.S., I find the prices amazingly low. (I only buy Kindle e-Books) and physical secondhand books from Amazon. I have so many books in my TBR pile, I just wait for book prices to go down to a couple of dollars before I buy.

I read a lot of short stories, mostly in horror anthologies. 2 of my favorite authors is E.F. Benson and M.R. James. The latter wrote exclusively in the short story format: ghost stories. E.F. Benson wrote the Mapp and Lucia novels but I was only interested in his spooky short stories. I only discover new authors through novels.

Reading Words of Radiance (sequel to Way of Kings) by Brandon Sanderson. Its amazing how much easier (and faster) it is to read fat books on a Kindle. I would have put off--tackling these 1,000+ pages in a mass paperback form. I don't know why that is.

If you write a specific genre, them you might want to join the Goodreads groups that are focused on it. Of course, sometimes I just get annoyed by authors opening threads just to put links to their book. If they are going to do this, they should put some effort into putting a short synopsis of what the book is about (more than a line). And I am a big fan of previewing the first few pages of a book. I can usually tell whether it will be something I want to read.

We started a LITTLE FREE LIBRARY on the street corner. Its a box of books that resembles a little house where we put in free books for people and they are free to drop off their own books too. Its never without books so that may be from all the KINDLES and Nooks in the neighborhood. If you get yourself registered, your Little Free Library can be shown in a web site which shows all the locations of these mini Libraries all over the country. And a lot of them are really pretty and creative little 'boxes." Just keep em waterproof!

I agree the Prime Videos are the main incentive for most people . . . if they don't read as many books as we do. I have been watching free Brit TV shows which I always miss when they show on PBS Masterpiece Theater or MYSTERY. And theres the great American TV series like FRINGE, XFILES and American Horror Story . . . or something like that. Too bad they dont have WALKING DEAD and HOUSE. And the documentaries are WOW. Like WILD CHINA and WILD AFRICA

Own an IPAD Air and the Kindle HDX. I prefer watching the movies on the Kindle. Superior sound and the picture looks heaps better . . . The power seems to drain faster on the Kindle as compared to the ipad when viewing films. (Could be because of the screen resolution) Books are read on both the Kindle app; I actually prefer reading on the IPAD. As for the apps, Apple beats the Kindle. The HDX is not as intuitive and there's not very many apps on it. The Lending Library is a nice perk. You can only borrow books on a KIndle and not on a Kindle app on an IPAD. Sadly, the Lending Library selection is very limited. (If you've never read any of the HARRY POTTER books, you're in luck.) Is mostly crappy gawdawful paranormal romances and mediocre books.

Reading MONGOLIAD by Neal Stephenson and some other sundry authors . . . it seems to move a lot faster . . . probably because I'm not getting a hernia from reading a 2 lb book in bed
