I don't know why but ever since Covid I have been binging anything that is horror or thriller/suspense. I think I like reading about fantastical lives that are worse off than a pandemic. A student recommended this to me. It's ... odd. I'm not sure I loved it but I certainly didn't hate it. It is a female-driven gothic tale that is ... odd. Just odd.
Burn Our Bodies Down
Okay, so I totally agree this was not what I expected when I started this. It wasn't as depictive of Mexican culture as I had hoped. I like the gothic parts of it. The slow descent of Catalina and watching Noemi try to fight that for both of them was a good vehicle to push her into growth and discover some strength she probably didn't know of before. I am always here for women finding their strength and being their own heroes. Her evolution was nice to watch. I wished more had been discussed on colonalism and race. I think it was assumed that we all understood or had a solid grasp on that history and the long lasting effects of that but confession time - I have limited knowledge at best of that and how it played out in Mexico. I would love to learn more.
It's been crazy. Who would've thought 2021 would be worse than 2020 but for me it was. Back at work, I work in a HS library so that's fun and I adore the kids. I check in when I can. This is a fun book I'll chime in for sure!
I love this book. The cover is what got me but it is a great gothic read. It's heavy on the gothic light on the Mexican which I was a little disappointed in I was hoping for some more cultural influences but still a delicious October read.
I'm still here and finding some time to read or at least listen to books. My library uses overdrive so I am able to access books there for free and thank goodness for Amazon in times like this. Wondering what people are reading now and maybe rather than a vote considering not everyone has access so easily and times are crazy we can just connect that way for a bit? Or maybe start to read together if we all seem to have or have access to a certain book?
Sorry I wasn't able to participate in March. My library shut down and homeschooling three kids all of a sudden took some getting used to. My question is how are you guys doing accessing books? Do you think we should do an April read? will people be able to get books easily or will this be too much to ask right now? Or is this needed? I go back and forth. Let me know what you think.
Sometimes I wish GR had a thumbs up icon to post in responses to posts. Some of your book reviews are so good and telling that they make me want to read a book or make me realize a book I thought I wanted to read probably isn't going to be a good fit for me. I think we should be able to have like star reviewers.
March's read is Miracle Creek! Get your hands on a copy now if you can and if Irene is ready I'm hoping we can start next week, the first week of March? Thanks, everyone for participating, voting, and nominating. If this goes well we will do another one next month.
Thanks Irene! I'm hoping for another vote or two to break the current tie. I opened it up for a couple more days.
If you scroll to the bottom of our group's homepage you will find the poll. Please take a moment to vote. I will keep it up for a week. Thanks!
