31572 So an example of what a religious man should be and a comment on the state of the clergy during his place and time?

31572 I just found this group. I am in the first book still, so nowhere near the group. BUT, this conversation is interesting and also sad. I feel like it makes the story less....I don’t know....different from what I have seen. I’ve seen the musical many times and both the movies multiple times. But I’ve never read the book until now. I saw the bishop as realistic. Maybe a little exaggerated, but still a real, good person. And now reading that Hugo meant for him to be satire....I’m not sure what to do with that. What does that say about Valjean and the candlesticks later? To me that’s always been a moment of redemption, another chance. He was playing a savior role and leading to the changing of a life. Now I’m confused about how to read it. Granted I’m not there yet, but I’m trying to wrap my head around the Bishop first. Help!
