I did fine in week one but in week two the politics of choosing a minister for the hospital bored me to tears and I fell behind. Finally made it through to book 3 and things are picking back up. Will probably need a break week in the future if it is possible.
I, for one, like Casaubon. It seems that he and Brooke could be a good match. My favorite character so far is Fred. I expect many great things from him.
Edith Grossman's translation of the Chapter 2 Epigraph:“Tell me, do you not see that knight coming toward us, mounted on a dappled gray and wearing on his head a helmet of gold?” “What I see and can make out,” responded Sancho, “is just a man riding a donkey that’s gray like mine, and wearing something shiny on his head.” “Well, that is the helmet of Mambrino,” said Don Quixote.
Pamela wrote: "It's the Prelude and Book One. Book One is 12 chapters."Sorry, I meant book 1. Thanks for the clarification.
I'm up for Tom Jones in November. I've never read it and I *should* have my TBR pile at least somewhat c..."Great! I am doing Middlemarch and it looks like that is scheduled to end about November 10th so we can start then or we can even start on November 1st and I'll just read Middlemarch a little quicker.
Maybe we will get a few more people on. I'll try and work out a reading schedule.
My wife has just decided to read along in her native Russian. She doesn't use GR too much but I'll pass along any thoughts she has.
I joined a month or so back but didn't introduce myself. My name is Harry and I love big books. I love an author who takes the time and the pages to really explore his subject. I have read a few 1000+ page books and cannot wait to read more.
My favorite modern chunkster is Thomas Pynchon's "Against the Day". The chunkster I want to read next is either William Gass's "The Tunnel" or Paul Auster's "4 3 2 1".
Nice to meet you all.
