Does it have to be a first novel that I read before the author had anything else out? If so, then I'd say Tithe by Holly Black. If not, then A Fine and Private Place by Peter S. Beagle.

On the other hand, if you want something from an author who's still new enough that you aren't likely to have heard of her, I'd go with Touch, by Gayleen Froese.
