I had my first signing of Cookie Encounter, an inspirational romance, back in Nov. I held it at a local bakery and sold 25 books. I think because my writer's group spread the word and because it was in a bakery a lot of people in the area love, it was a win-win.

I guess it depends on the title and your tie-in to where the signing is being held. I did send a press release and a write-up was in the paper after the signing (the journalist came to the signing), but don't think that netted any sales. I also had some door prizes.

I had fun though and only held it for 2 hours, to keep things moving. I had flyers and posted them in several places in the area, neighboring towns, but don't think they helped much either.
