For training purposes, Jack Daniels' book is extremely valuable. If you're looking for a look into NCAA Cross Country, Running with the Buffalos is awesome. Running fiction wise, Once a Runner and the sequel Again to Carthage are the benchmarks. For those interested I just wrote my own piece of running fiction, Chasing Ghosts.
I loved Once a Runner. It was one of my inspirations-along with years of running experience- to write Chasing Ghosts. Parker's Again to Carthage is good, but not the classic that Once a Runner is. I do think it's worth the read, however.
Hey Doug,If you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to ask. I see you asked John, the moderator, about running and a novel. I recently wrote a running-centered novel, Chasing Ghosts if you're interested. It's available on Amazon as well as the Kindle and Nook.

Doug,I'm a newcomer to the mix, but I also ran in college and have coached high school track and xc since 2000 in Philadelphia. My advice for youth coaching- I'm assuming you are coaching kids younger than high school- is to build a foundation of endurance, speed and strength. Keep it fun and try to expose them to different styles of training and different events. Hope this helps.

Hey All,I'm new here to goodreads so if I breach etiqutte, I do apologize. Thought everyone might be interested in my new novel, Chasing Ghosts. Set in Philly, it's about a runner, nearing thirty, who decides to take one last shot at greatness. It's available currently on Amazon and for the kindle. If you have any questions, drop me a line.
