I’m only 24 pages in and the action has already started. I wish I had a little more character info before the murder happens because at this point I’m not rooting for anyone (I don’t have enough information about the characters to decide who to like/dislike) Also I’ve never read anything by Arthur Conan Doyle so I won’t get any of the references (I just now googled and realized the title is even a reference. Although this might be fun to reread after I do read The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes and his other works.

I think I might start with the 3rd book, because I reread the first two, plus, The Assassin's Blade end of last year/beginning of this year. If you want to start a buddy read when you get to that point just let me know!

Hopefully I’ll be back to joining in next month. Life has been crazy for me these last few months! I did try to read When Dimple Met Rishi several months ago and DNF’ed it. I thought I would love it, but halfway through realized I just didn’t care for the plot. Depending on what y’all think when you finish, I might try again.
I've tried to read this twice now. I put it down this time when I found myself reading the same paragraph over and over again. I just don't even know if I can make myself read a 100 pages. :(
Sorry I missed the live show. I just now finished it this morning. I think it might have got me out of my reading slump. We will see. Not sure what to rate it yet though. Maybe a 4 out of 5? I actually knew it was going to be Bram. There are small hints of it. If you go back and look he’s always smiling and such when Simon is around.
First ten chapters* Also Gabby I realized that it says the live show is March 24th. You mean Feb 24th right?
This was a good choice for February’s book. I’ve been in a HUGE reading slump and just now managed to pick this up. However, I’ve flown through the first ten chapters. P.S. I definitely don’t think it’s Martin.
Oooh, you might be right Gabby. I wonder what her putting on the ring signifies? I absolutely hated Cardan at first but now I’m rooting for him. What has happened?! Haha. As of right now I’m so conflicted on how I feel about Madoc, but perhaps that is what Holly Black was aiming for? I also really dislike Taryn. She’s tried so hard to fit into the fae world that she has definitely become like them.
Yes Cy! I like Madoc’s character as well. Then I think to myself “am I supposed to like his character? He did just kill this girl’s parents right in front of her.”
I think Cardan does have feelings for Jude that is not just hate. I mean... why does he hate her that much?? He must have deep feelings for her that he’s trying to push down. His beating also put things into perspective about why he is the way he is. However, only one of two things could happen with that. He might fight it and actually better himself or it could just serve to make him even darker like Jude mentioned.
What I really can’t understand how Madoc has essentially become a father figure to the girls when he killed their own parents? Maybe it was because they were just so young when it happened. At the same time, even though he murdered the parents, he still seems kind of likeable in a way.I haven’t read a villain I have just despised in a long time. I absolutely can not stand Cardan. Holly Black is doing an excellent job of writing her villains.
I see what y’all mean by the info dump, but it almost didn’t feel info dumpy to me it was written so well I think. However, I had a little trouble keeping up with everyone at first.
I just got black bird of the gallows for Christmas! Uprooted would be another suggestion. I like the idea of throwing a contemporary in there too.
I kind of feel the opposite from you Tricia. I really enjoyed the beginning and then about halfway I started getting bored. The ending definitely picked up though. I definitely will be continuing this series. I would probably rate it a 3.75 as well. A few things were a miss for me. I agree that the attack on the city wasn’t fully discussed. It was like it was just kind of thrown in there, and when Wil and Zay escaped it was all forgotten. Also I wanted to know more about Zay and Loom’s marriage. They acted like it was a brother/sister type of love at some parts, yet Wil even mentions her jealousy at the idea of them kissing. So was there actually something to their marriage at one point?
I actually liked Espel’s character because she definitely seemed morally gray.. like there was some good hiding in her. I hope we see more of her in the second book. I also like how much Loom’s/Espel’s sibling dynamic differed from Wil and her siblings.
I wanted Loom to find out who Wil truly is in this book, but I guess I’ll just have to wait for the second one.
Oh wait. I answered my own question. Zay’s son. Do you ever catch yourself not even paying attention to what you read? I’m bad about that.
Okay I’ve obviously missed something. Were we introduced to Ada before page 228 because I don’t remember him at all.
I’m beginning to feel that this is a lot like Shatter Me (except different writing styles of course). Girl’s touch causes death. Meets a guy who is immune to her touch. I will probably throw this book if Loom ends up with some magical ability too, lol.
