Attention all lovers of Old Norse literature: a new Edda reading group (Lokasenna) is starting this week, details here.
I'm sure Tolkien would have wanted you to know that the Old Norse Literature group is about to start a reading group for the Hávamál. Details here.
And this week, we're doing verses 16-23: the creation of Ask and Embla, and the first war in the world. The thread is here. I constantly hear echoes of the Silmarillion... though of course really it's vice versa.
This week, we will be discussing the verses which include the dvergatal - the "Reckoning of Dwarves", from which Tolkien borrowed the names in The Hobbit. Details here.
Feel free to comment, especially if you think there's something to this idea!I had not read the Völuspá until I got involved in this project with the Icelanders, but everything people say about its influence on Tolkien is clearly true, and then some...
People in this group may be interested in joining the group read we've just started for the Völuspá, Tolkien's favourite poem. We're using an online edition that we've developed together with a group at the University of Iceland, where you can hear verses read in the original Old Norse, see translations, get a concordance for each word, etc. Details here.
