I had not read the Völuspá until I got involved in this project with the Icelanders, but everything people say about its influence on Tolkien is clearly true, and then some...

353 People in this group may be interested in joining the group read we've just started for the Völuspá, Tolkien's favourite poem. We're using an online edition that we've developed together with a group at the University of Iceland, where you can hear verses read in the original Old Norse, see translations, get a concordance for each word, etc. Details here.
