353 Awaiting the Desolation of Smaug movie, the second chapter of Peter Jackson’s trilogy based on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, the Roman Association of Tolkien Studies – ArsT (www.jrrtolkien.it) has scheduled a series of fan-films related to The Lord of the Rings.

353 Hi everybody
I would like to know which is, according to your opinion, the correct order in which to read Tolkien's works, and why would you sugest such an order.

I read Hobbit/lord/Silmarillion/Unfinisched/HoME - and years after, when they were published, Children of Hurin.

In my opinion, a good order could be
-the Hobbit, tLotR, the Children of Hurin (for they are stories by Tolkien with no/small editing by his son Christopher)
- The Silmarillion (because it gives all the background)
- Unfinished Tales (the firs one with many notes)
- the History of Middle Earth

353 @Flummox and Rebecca

I don't know if there is a "correct order" in which to read Tolkien's works.

I think it's an interesting question, and I will search for a previous discussion, to add my comment. If I could not find a previous discussion, I will start it

353 The first time I read tLotR I was sixteen and it took me 6 day - it captured me; i read dawn to dusk and, when I finished it, I wanted more.

So, after a while, I read the Silmarillion

That's me!

I ordered, for no good reason, the new trasltion _in_latin_ o f the Hobbit (Hobbitus Ille)
I have created some tables if errors in the italian translation of LotR, Silmarillion and such.

I have read Hobbit/LotR/Silmarillion (in italian and english) tens of times and I can pick lotR, open it randomly and start reading, knowing qhat has happened and what is going to happen.

I'm really a fan(athic) of Tolkien's books and I have a t-shirt saying so (in Italian)
http://www.soronel.it/Maglietta.html

The caption reads: "The Lord of the Rings? I don't care about the movie. I'm a fan of the book"

A frend of mine devised the whole, but the phrase is mine -and I'm proud of it.

I attend meetings about tolkien-lore, when I can. And I am so extremely happy to have a chance to meet prof. Tom Shippey and prof. Verlyn Flieger in Bologna (Italy) in may 2010

I foundend a group of Tolkien fan (all sorts - from the 'learned loremaster' to the 'liked the movie, read the book' type) in Rome in 2001. We still meet mounthly to chat and drink.

Am I enought fan(athic)?
:-D

Cheers

PS
of course I have read all of the the HoME (except book 3), the Letters, nd others Tolkien's essays and book plus some book about Tolkien's works, such as "Splintered Lights" and "The road to Middle Earth)

353 Thank you for adding it, Michael.
The english edition is brand new, so it's not a wonder it was not in Goodreads.

353 I have read the book in italian and it is very interesting, being - as far as I know - the first book dedicated to death and immortality in the Works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Here is the link to the book's page:

353 Hi. I'm Norbert, from Italy

I have been reading Tolkien since 1986 and I read tLotR and the Silmarillion many, many times, both in the italian transation and in english. I read almost all the History of Middle Earth and the Unfinisched Tales, the Hobbit, the Letters, Tree and leaf, "On fairy stories"

Some ten years ago I started reading book _about_ Tolkien, such as "The Road to Middle Earth" and "Splintered Lights" and found them really interesting.

One a month I meet in a pub with other friends who love Tolkien to eat, drink, chat and (sometimes) talk about Tolkien

I think I'm a Tolkien fan(atic)
:-)
