I was watching the news yesterday and I looked up just after they mentioned where in Africa Steve Harrigan (the reporter) was - which I do all the time; miss the where's, the why's, the who's - and the women were making cookies for the children to eat. Dirt cookies.

For eighteen years dirt has been a staple of their diet; they mix two or three other ingredients with the dirt, pour a glop of it on a flat stone and give it a swirl with their hand and it makes a 'cookie'. I believe they just let them dry, they don't cook them.

Steve (who always participates in whatever horrific story he's participating in so he has a greater perspective on things) took a bite (snap).

He chewed a little, then his face looked like it was going to shrivel up and spew forth the cookie but he gagged it down. Then he just turned and shook his head in disgust.

I don't think I'm going to get that little news item out of my head for a long time.
