Mary is really starting to grow on me especially when she intervened for Fanny. She's a lot less rude\difficult than what I anticipated. I hope she keeps this up. Haha
I agree with a lot of things being said about Mary Crawford. I see her decision in choosing Edmund over Tom but how can you truly love someone if you can't even accept their profession. Her desire to change him irks me. Haha! And I find her comments to be rather cruel but for some reason (this is my first time reading the novel) I think that there may be more to Mary than meets the eye.
The trip to Mr. Rushworth's home really gave me insight to Maria and Julia and their personalities. I somewhat felt sorry for Mr. Rushworth when he was so openly abandoned by Maria for Mr. Crawford. And it still amazes me how openly Mr. Crawford is willing to accept the affection and attention from both sisters.

I feel the same way! It has been so difficult for me to read this book and watch Fanny remain so silent when she isn't treated fairly or when she's treated poorly. Yes her upbringing has a lot to do with it, but I too find my self shouting "Come on!! Say something!"
Louise that's a good point. I never thought about the fact that Fanny's personality/demeanor could be due to the manner in which she was raised. I wonder what she would have been like if she wasn't forced to leave home.
I really like how Edmund cares for Fanny even in as simple as making she has a horse of her own to ride. He seems like the only person in the family that genuinely cares about the feelings, needs, and wants of Fanny and I find that truly compassionate. I'm still debating and trying to figure out how I feel about Mary Crawford. There are some things I don't like about her, but I'll have to keep reading to make my final judgment. :-)
Wow! I love the discussion that's going on. This is my 4th JA novel (I've read P&P, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion). I absolutely love the fact that the reader is introduced to Fanny's childhood and the development of her relationships with her family members. I can understand how people can perceive Fanny to be a weak character but I don't think I would be emotionally stable if I was given up by one family to barely be accepted by another. She has it pretty tough and my opinion. It bothers me so much that she doesn't have any confidence in herself. In my edition (Barnes and Noble Classic) pg. 23 she states that she could never be important to anyone because of her "foolishness and awkwardness." That just tore me apart. But so far I'm really into it. I believe someone stated earlier that Mrs. Norris is like a Lady Catherine with less money! Haha I totally agree with that.
