So, I finally finished the book. I HATED it. I gave it a 1.5 Stars.I read 750 pages for it to be a con? Which is fine but 500 of those pages were unnecessary. I didn't not guess that it was a con, because Gaiman really didn't give you enough info to make a good guess. there were the few tiny hints of Wednesday telling about having a con-artist partner, and Loki showing up at the end, but I feel like I just wasted a ton of time on this stupid book! I didn't really like any of the characters, and the book was SO DRY.
Rant over.
I just got to the part where Shadow and Wednesday were about to hit a road block, but got away just in time.I'm so happy that someone finally questioned why Shadow was so calm! I was getting frustrated with Shadow being so chill about life threatening situations, so I'm so happy that Neil Gaiman explains why he is so calm all the time! I think that Laura's affair is a good/believable reason for him to be so calm. I'm surprised to see how devistated he is by it, because he really hasn't shown too much emotion about it up until now.
The book is kind of starting to drag for me. I feel like Gaiman doesnt give enough info to keep you satisfied, so the story has kind of been dragging for me. The Las Vegas part was a little confusing to me. I feel like it was wrote to be kind of dream like, but overall I'm left a little confused, and kind of wondering what the point of it was. Whatever god they were dealing with (or if it was a god) has something to do with hallucinations/dreams I think. 😊
So I'm up to the point of where Shadow is spending time with the undertakers.I'm assuming the cat is a goddess who shapeshifts into a cat due to Shadow's kind of but not sex dream.
Also Jacquel and Ibis explaining that it's hard to bring back people from the dead makes me think that Laura was brought back by someone. At first I thought it was the gold coin, but now I wonder if someone brought her back.
I just read to the part where Shadow meets Sam. The carousel part in the house on the rock was super trippy. It was a little confusing for me to imagine, especially when the gods/goddesses were switching from their original form to their new form.
I wasn't expecting Shadow to get kidnapped again. I'm assuming at this point that the new gods aren't the nicest. I can't really form an opinion on which gods are good, and which are bad. I think Shadow is kind of in the same boat. He's hesitant to give these new gods any information, because he doesnt know their intentions, but he isn't fully behind the old gods either, because they really havent told him much. I'm thinking that all the gods suck.
I'd like to see Gaiman bring in gods from the biggest religions followed today (such as God, Allah, etc). I'm just curious how that would play out, because Christianity and Islam are both really old religions and wouldn't be considered "new".
I'm kind of thinking that Sam isn't exactly human, so I'm excited to see how their car ride plays out.
Okay, so I just remembered that the word "Wednesday" is named after ODIN. Oh my word...I see what you did there Neil Gaiman. It's not confirmed yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.
I just passed the point where Laura visits Shadow in the motel room. I have a feeling the coin he gave her had something to do with her visiting, but it might have something to do with him getting involved with a bunch of gods. I still have no idea what the main plot is going to be. I'm thinking it has something to do with new gods wanting to kick out the old gods, but I could be completely wrong. The book has me intrigued, some parts are weird/disturbing, but I do want to know what's going on!
So, I am going to take a wild guess and say that the people who kidnapped Shadow while he was walking back to the motel after the funeral was technology as a "god". I'm also going to take a wild guess and say Mr. Wednesday is Odin, because he has only one eye. Also that fact that Shadow had to drink mead to "seal the deal" kinda makes me think Norse god. However, I have no idea why Odin would be traveling around with a leprechaun...
So I got to the part where Shadow reacted to the information of Laura cheating on him. I understand that he was mad at Audrey for making him see Laura in a different light, but I guess I'm more like Audrey in the sense of I'd rather look at the truth then a lie. Sure the lie might be nicer, but even if the truth hurts I'd rather have the truth. I also understand that most people aren't like that, and I don't know if Audrey went about the best way of telling Shadow, but I also understand that Audrey was upset. She tried to make up for it after the burial by trying to explain to Shadow how she was feeling, and I think her feelings are 100% justified, but I also see that he'd be angry with her for destroying his view of Laura (even though Laura destroyed it herself when she decided to cheat on him). I liked seeing how Neil Gaiman kind of put two different reactions to a spouse finding out they're being cheated on, because both reactions are realistic, and their reactions give a little bit more depth to both Audrey and Shadow's character.
I just got to page 64 in my copy where Shadow attends Laura's funeral, and Laura's best friend Audrey drops the bomb that Laura and Robbie were having an affair. No one else has confirmed it at this point, but I'm assuming it's true. Shadow really hasn't reacted to this news. I'd probably stormed out, or caused a scene or something, but wow this man is super patient! I kinda suspected something was up though, because like I said earlier it was weird to me that Laura waited around for Shadow to get out of prison, but an affair would kind of explain why!
Jacqueline (Fall In Love With The Sound of Words) wrote: "I have to say this wasn’t a favorite for me, but maybe a reread will change that! I also really like the new discussion set up. Makes things much easier"I've heard from other people that it wasn't their favorite either, but I'm hopeful that I'll maybe like it!
I'm so happy to hear that! I was hoping that this would be a better set up to discuss the book! :D
I just got American Gods today! I picked it up, and read about 35 pages. I've never read anything by Neil Gaiman, but I thought the best way to do the book club for me was to read a little everyday, and post my thoughts after each day for discussion (I'm reading approx 30 pages a night). I was surprised by how the book started out. I don't really know what the book is about, so I'm mostly going into it blind. I thought the name, "Shadow" was a little weird for a book that is kind of set in a world based off of our own. (Of course, maybe the world is really different from ours I'm only 35 pages in, so I'm going off of what I know so far).
Anyways, I was surprised that our main character starts out in prison. By page 35 we can assume it's due to him being an ex-con artist? I'm not really sure though. I wasn't really happy with the racial slurs that were used in the first 30 pages of the book though. Am I the only one that was irked by that?
This totally sounds bad, but was I the only one surprised that his wife waited for him for three years while he was in prison? Like that's a long time, especially when it's 'cause your husbands in the clink. Anyways, Laura (I think that's her name) dies right as he's getting out of prison, which seems like it's foreshadowing major stuff to go down. Plus, did anyone find it weird that Mr. Wednesday (the guy Shadow meet on the plane that offers him a job), makes a comment about it was sad that his wife HAD to die? Like the word "had" has me thinking her death wasn't exactly accidental....
Don't read any of the comments until you've read up until chapter 11! Again, I don't want anyone to get spoiled. However, feel free to post comments as you read! :D
Don't read any of the comments until you've read up to chapter six! :) Don't want anyone to be spoiled ;)
February's book pick is American Gods by Neil Gaiman. :DAgain, I apologize, but the live stream for the Gospel of Loki has been moved to February 10, 2018 at 3 pm PST.
I just had to share some of my favorite quotes I've come across. I don't know if they are spoilery so proceed at your own risk.POSSIBLE SPOILERS:
"Why Balder do you ask? Some things are just instinctive. It wasn't that he disliked me -that, after all, was hardly unprecedented. It wasn't that women adored him, or that men all wanted to be him. It wasn't even that Balder was handsome, brave, good, and true, or that if he as much as farted, birds sang, flowers bloomed, and small furry animals gamboled and frolicked around him in joyous abandon. To tell the truth I don't really know why I hated Balder. Perhaps because people liked him so much; perhaps because he'd never had to struggle for acceptance. Face it, the guys was born with a whole set of golden cutlery in his mouth, and if he was good it was because he'd never had to be otherwise. And to make matters worse, it was he who first poured me a cup of wine, put a garland on my head, and told me I was welcome." -Joanne Harris
My inner angsty teenage self identified with that quote. Probably because I've felt the exact same way all throughout my life.
"No doubt about it, I told myself. These bastards really don't like me." -Joanne Harris
Again I've been here before haha XD I think I relate to how honest Loki is with himself. If things suck he doesn't try to sugar coat it. He just deals with it, and doesn't really let the other gods and goddesses get him down.
"Of course the ladies gave me the eye. A bad boy is always appealing, and I'd always had a silver tongue." -Joanne Harris
I just enjoyed sassy Loki too much :D
