I've read 5 books by Remarque and one thing that is very intriguing is how he manages to embed characters from past works into proceeding books. Somehow they are not the same people, but they share many characteristics. Currently I am reading A Time to Love... and Binding, the SA officer, draws similarities to the Binding of a previous book (either Road Back or Three Comrades) that after the Great War remained a soldier and machine gunned down the demonstrators.

Is there a term for this literary mechanism? Leave me your thoughts and other examples.
