we did act as a pick up point though for people to collect the books for onwards distribution, saw a list recently
Not been here for a while but hope to be alot more this year!!! So my suggestion for a classic - Pride and Prejudice
or one I have read but just didn't get at all - The Daylight Gate by Jeanette Winterson Would be interesting to hear others point of view on this book - and its short so could always be a 2nd read for October!
One that springs to mind that I loved as a film and a book - The Beach by Alex Garland. I saw that 'The Poison Tree' is going to be released shortly too, that could be interesting as when I read the book I wasn't entirely sure what to make of it but found myself thinking about it afterwards...wonder how it would transfer to the screen
I think when you read a book first you get a picture of how you think the characters look in your head and invariably when you see the film you think the casting director has gone mad! I hear Tom Cruise is being cast as Jack Reacher...most of my readers at work seem to think that is ludicrous
I'll nominate a book I am drawn to reading, but in a genre I don't usually touch - 'The Candle Man' by Alex Scarrow - published April 2012 - a Victorian thriller that seems to link the Titanic with Jack the Ripper!
I quite like short stories if I want a quick fix and like JackieB says its a good way to check out a new genre
Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami - we read Norweigan Wood by same author a long time ago so I am not sure if that rules him out, but would like to read more of his books - Japenese too I think!
Please lets not read Coehlo though, I read one of his books liked it, started another hated it, don't wish to read anymore!!!
Has anyone else read the July read yet? Calico Joe - I borrowed it from my library and read it in about 2 hours, its not too long and you don't need to know about baseball particularly, its more about a difficult father/son relationship and about redemption - a decent enough read and a little bit different to John Grishams usual courtroon drama.
Just wondering ....if you had to recommend a few books that have stayed with you long after you read them or made you go 'Wow' or that hit you with a really unexpected twist....what would you recommend? I want to read something exciting/memorable!off the top of my head I would go for 'We Need To Talk About Kevin' Lionel Schriver 'A Kind of Intimacy' Jenn Ashworth and a blast from the past 'Flowers in the Attic' Virginia Andrews
