Hello all! How has everyone been enjoying the Last Wish? Who would you say is your favorite character or favorite side character? And were you expecting the fairy tale aspects of the short stories? :)
Hello everyone!!! How are you all liking the second set of short stories? I forgot how much the third one bummed me out. I mean, it's great, and it really shows Geralt's character, but I felt so bad for Renfri! Her life was so tragic :'(
Happy Witcher Wednesday!!!Spoilers for the designated reading points ahead, so if you haven’t finished reading up to where a Grain of Truth starts, don’t read this! Also, if you’re new to the group, the designated reading sections are in earlier thread titled Witcher Buddy Reading Info :)
Alrighty, what are everyone’s thoughts so far?
When I first started reading Witcher, I was surprised by the large amount of dialogue. It took me some getting used to, but this time around I’m LOVING it. Listening to the audio books has been fun too, because sometimes it can be a bit confusing keeping track of who is who when people are referred to as “the man” or “the pockmarked man” 😆
Something I find Sapkowski does really well is show you multiple sides. In the short story of The Witcher, you kinda feel for Foltest even though he *cough* gets it on with his sister. But he clearly wants to help his daughter and cease her suffering, which I always found to be a sign of compassion. But then we hear from Ostrit, who loved the king’s sister Adda. It almost seems fitting that the striga kills him since he caused the curse, but the curse was an accident! 😩 Idk how you all feel about it, but it hit me even harder this time around.

I completely agree! Geralt is such an interesting character because he's not "pure" by a lot of our character standards. Many of the situations he's presented with don't have a set right path, which I think is more realistic to real life.
Also, the mom issues...:O
I don't remember off the top of my head if him biting the striga gets referenced later, but I don't think it does. To me, it was one of two things. One, Geralt was just trying to protect himself because he was bleeding so much and wanted to make sure she was too weak to come after him when he bandaged his wound (or feinted, which he did :D). Or he was trying to weaken her enough to help alleviate her monster instincts...if that makes sense. Because up until that point, she was fighting him, but then she just starts crying after that.
Idk for sure though! The book often leaves things unanswered so that the reader can come to their own conclusions :)

I believe that's correct :)

Let me check!
Josh wrote: "Hey all! I have just joined Goodreads, so please bare with me as I get to grips with it :). I'm also active on the FB group and am looking forward to the discussions!"No worries! I'm not very good with goodreads myself, so I'll likely be relying on other people to help :D
Hello all :D Lengthy post coming up, but hopefully it'll answer some questions for all of you.The Last Wish is the first book in the Witcher series, even though Blood of Elves is the one that--on the American editions--has a 1 on the side. Ignore that! The Last Wish is first :)
Also, the Last Wish is a series of short stories, and they're NOT in chronological order. They go back and forth between events in Geralt's past, and present day (all the present day chunks are titled Voice of Reason). Just a heads up in case you're super confused in the beginning :D
As far as not giving away spoilers but still chatting--I'm going to have a rough schedule of when I read what. I'm going to chat on Wednesdays with all the groups, but feel free to chat in between each Wednesday :) Here's how I'm breaking up the reading:
-Voice of Reason to the start of Grain of Truth. Pages 1-44 by Jan 3rd
-Grain of Truth to the start of Voice of Reason on page 130 by Jan 10th
-Voice of Reason to the start of The Edge of the World on page 188 by Jan 17th
-The Edge of the World to the start of The Last Wish on page 245 by Jan 24th
-The Last Wish through the end of the book (page 320) by Jan 31st
Sorry if any of the page numbers are different in your editions!
Feel free to read ahead of this schedule, just try not to post about any of the things beyond the schedule for people that want to stick to it. That way no one gets spoiled! :)
Lastly, for those of you that are interested in listening to the audio books, here's a link to them: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...
If you don't have your book by the first, don't worry about it! Feel free to jump on board whenever you're ready.
Happy reading everyone! Yay for Witcher :D
