is Martin Amis considered as a Welsh writer? I recently ready "London Fields" by him and did not really like it. " Money" is his other famous book, but I'm not fully convinced if I should suggest it.
I also missed most of the satire. I absolutely loved The Master and Margarita and Mikhail BulgakovThe Life of Monsieur de Moliere, but this book failed to grab me. The references in The Master and Margarita were much more obvious. I still enjoyed reading "Heart of a Dog", but not as much as I hoped.
It is very embarrassing to admit that I haven't read War and Peace yet and this would be my suggestion.
(Is this where I could post my thoughts after finishing Half of a Yellow Sun? I thought there was a separate thread, but I cannot find it...) I finished today Half of a Yellow Sun and I am disappointed. Even though the book had it moments, overall it did not touch me. Somehow I was detached from the characters. In my opinion, they were rather flat. I did not see the point in telling the story not chronologically. On the other hand, the sentence "The World Was Silent When We Died" still echoes in my ears. I would be happy to discuss the book further (especially with someone having a different opinion).
I absolutely loved Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Recently I read No Longer at Ease by, which was not as good as Things Fall Apart. I still have Arrow of God on my bookshelf.Another suggestion would be Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie or a Nobel prize winner Wole Soyinka's Season Of Anomy.
