416761 I wish Joseph was more lenient and understood his children better. I myself did not have any issues with my parents about my future. They knew early on I was interested in nothing but art and so they didn't really tell me I must study hard or get aced in class. I am sure it would have been different if my family had lived in other countries as working class immigrants.

The part where Joseph got angry when Casey's sister didn't want to be a surgeon reminds me of your mentioning about having only two options growing up. Parents want their children to have a better life but they should not force them to become what they wanted to do when they were younger. It was so sad to see her feel so guilty about her decision. It's her life and her dad should respect her decision but as far as I know, a lot of Korean parents are not like that.
416761 Oh my god! this is exactly why I was even more in love with Pachinko. Over the past few months, I was completely in love with books written by African and African-American authors and surprisingly I found them all so relatable. Then I wanted books by Asian authors, actually more of Korean authors.

I love learning about other cultures through books. I am glad we started this book club. I have not read many books by turkish, indian, or east european authors before so I do hope we will read those and give spotlight to the books that need to be heard.
