I found this story a very easy read. I kept thinking though that Scrape was going to wake up outside the city and have all his friends still there. I had a hard time picturing the characters but really likes the interactions. I am not sure I liked the fact that he had to loose all friends and basically let a couple die. Did you have Laughs bait the thief into getting ripped apart because then we wouldn't mind him getting killed?
I, too, found the totem magic a great concept. I do think that while Scrape was working on the carbon paper, Tama could have been a bit more animated trying to get his attention. I would have been going nuts.
This story was great. I loved the development of Eyja and her relationship with her father. Also, well told her relationship with the priest training her. Ok you got me - where do we see Eyja and Gunnleif again - they are a special pair.
I have to admit, I did not like this character although I found the writing very well done. I really expected the Black Wolves to avoid the MC even more after he beat and killed a defenseless man. I found the fact that the "boy", after being ridiculed by his men, could react that way very feasible and was a good testament to how treatment of the young can harden and change their characters. This could be a character I love to hate. ;-)

Just that you both or all kinda read the book in the same month and talk about it. What is next on the list?
This story knows how to paint a picture of despair and heroism. Although it didn't really give a good picture of the dragons, it did portray the struggle of Elsie in trusting the dragon prince. She was an interesting character and it is a shame that the series does not continue her story. You might want to consider bringing out her life and Balliol's in another series or story.
But I liked the writing so will be looking for more of the same.

Can you share where the penguin classics reading list is? sounds interesting...maybe you are interested in a buddy read?
I found the story style in this one to be wonderful. Brava! I truly enjoyed reading this story. Did you choose Kane to liken the name to Cain and Abel of the Bible? This story made me chuckle and also brought home the terrible waste of humanity that strives to kill more better and faster every year. It made me think with so many against war - is it inherent in the human genes? If so is Kane justified? If so, isn't destroying life the same thing Kane is against?
Deep thoughts for such a great story. **sigh**
Love the style - and the thought provoking content. Is your other writing tending the same way? I have not yet had the pleasure.
I liked how the story pulled all the different myths together about the great flood. I did not realize that so many were similar. So if Fintan wasn't human - what was he supposed to be. Is Myrddin supposed to be likened to Merlyn?
I too caught the slip of "And I ran on..." - masterfully done. What a slap in the face that one slip was. I was expecting that somehow she would birth her twin but man the description - stunning and gruesome.
Did you liken the woman (soft gentle) to summer on purpose and man (hard cruel) to winter?
I totally did not expect the lost man to turn into who he did. Wow.

Maybe because that was emphasized so much in the story. I really liked the sentiment of the ending just got lost on the "hold tight" part.
The writing and painting of the characters and scenes - excellent - one to watch for...
Just finished the story and I really liked the interaction between the characters. I have never played Pathfinder so perhaps the reference was not clear to me. I loved the dungeon crawl as you say and the fact that Hesk had two different characterizations in the story - good adventuresome noble man saving the mystery man and mercenary/thief wanting so much more.
I totally did not get the ending though - does it have a reference that I am missing because I am not a Pathfinder person? I really loved the story and the writing painted a great picture of all characters but the ending left me with...Say What?
I did think it was intriguing that he actually heard her talk. Does that mean that he too is mad because of his adventure in the crypt?
I found the fight under the roots quite well done. I have not read the Landkist novels but as a short story I thought the character of Maro very illuminating. A young boy without ties or friendship will make for a taciturn mysterious character in adulthood. I thought the world that was portrayed at the beginning had a lot of problems. Were the willows, trees? I had to work very hard to try to get the picture that was being painted. And who were the crows? Also, what was the purpose of Brega communing with the tree?
The scenes in the story reminded me so much of the Star Wars second episode where Luke goes into the cave to face himself. A great concept but very much more so with others in there with him and a vastness that was a bit magical. Did that scene in Star Wars inspire this one?

A very interesting story. Felton was well portrayed as a young man with his first crush. Tad as his younger brother was so trusting and cute. I liked the whole premise of stories becoming reality but have to admit not being familiar with the Magpie King it might not have had the impact it could have. I did find it very well written. I wonder if GR has limits on the TBR list...
J.M. by intros - do you mean reviews? I generally accept friend requests from people with the same interests as I have based on their reviews. But I generally don't accept requests of people that have over 300 friends because I feel how can you possibly keep up with 300 people. Personally I don't have the time but might change my mind after I retire. ;-)

I really liked Farden and his companions so I will have to check out the series - thanks for the info.

A real setup for the next series I would think.
Hi Ben,I normally don't read short stories because I feel like the characters are not developed but in this case I really thought you did a great job on Hereni. Her devastation with the thought that she was the cause of her family being killed and subsequent need to be a part of something bigger. I thought the premise of the world very good.
Not sure if the publisher missed some words a couple times or what - one where I thought the word "head" was missing in the second fight scene where they pick up the girl.
Also I was unclear and maybe just me - but it seemed the last scenes were of the people that picked her up practicing, then all of a sudden fighting. Did the king's army find them and attack?
I thought the description of Farden was really well done. I could see him standing with sword alight.
I too give this a 3+ stars. However, I am intrigued - so this is the sequel novella to your first series correct? If so, I will have to try that out.
I too enjoyed the dry humor of the characters...
