Huge fan of Walter Mosley myself (Easy Rawlins series, Fearless Jones, and the new one Leonid McGill)...also there's Lee Child's Reacher books which run the gamut from Mystery to Thriller. Spenser is always a fun read if not always well-plotted, and Lawrence Block had a stellar series about Matt Scudder which I think has drawn to a close....
...I've just discovered Richard Stark (Donald Westlake) and his Parker books about a relentless criminal. Just a few suggestions...
