50x66 All this needs to be completed before class on Wednesday.

1. Reading ON the line. Write a half-page summary of the poem. Make sure to include who the characters in the poem are, what happens, where it happens, when it happens (if you can’t place a date, use context clues to figure out an era, like “1800s” or “1900s” or “2000s”), and how it happens. Don’t rewrite the poem, but be as specific as possible.

2. Reading BETWEEN the lines. You should have already completed a TPCASTT for this poem. Now, complete a rhetorical triangle for the poem (you may use your notes to remember how). Also, write three (3) questions about this poem that you think are reading between the lines questions (use your notes: these questions ask the reader to interpret, analyze, compare, etc). THEN, get one of the level 2 questions that another student wrote. Write their level 2 question on your paper (so now you have four level 2 questions on your paper) and answer it.

3. Reading THROUGH the lines. There are at least two themes in this poem. Write out what you think the two themes are. REMEMBER, themes are written in sentences. THEN, look up “thesis statement” in the glossaries of the blue literature book and the new white book called The Write Source. Read everything you can about thesis statements. Now, write a thesis statement for each of the themes you came up with.

50x66 1. How does the temporal structure of Our Town reflect and influence the main ideas of the play?

2. As little happens in the play in terms of dramatic events, the thematic content of the play and Wilder’s attempt to engage his audience actively take center stage. The success of the play depends on its ability to break down the so-called “fourth wall” between the audience and the actors. How does Wilder break down this barrier between the audience and the action onstage?

3. Is Thornton Wilder’s view of small town life positive or negative?
