Great discussion last week! It reinforced my thoughts: yep, I loved it, and yep, there were a few bits that continued to drive me nuts throughout the book. The language didn't click for me (though I admit it strengthened the book overall) and the latter half of the book seemed to take a few shortcuts. The echos of technology combined with primitive mysticism is a strong, common theme that can work well, but I felt like it missed in a few places on this one. Still, probably one of my favorite post-apoc reads so far!
I'm looking forward to it too! 6 chapters in now, and I'm finding it's pretty easy to pick everything up contextually. Still, I just found this: http://www.errorbar.net/rw/chapter/and it was interesting to go back and see what I missed. The parsing of Eusa's story was particularly interesting.
I have to say - and I know I will get over it - that the language is interesting, but distracting. I tend to get hung up on dialects and phrasing, and words started jumping out at me. Why did night become nite, but right stayed right? And in the old spelling, knowing is noeing, but somehow they rediscovered the silent k after that? Little things, I know, and they're not stopping me from liking this a lot and being fascinated, but they do keep grabbing me.
I actually have nothing to say yet, since I haven't picked up the darn thing yet. But I will! And now the thread is started!
