What did you think when Cassia realizes they poison the food given to the elderly so they will die on their eightieth birthdays? Is it immoral, or does it make sense?
Cassia says, “The two desires struggle within me: the desire to be safe, and the desire to know. I cannot tell which one will win.” Which desire do you think is more important for Cassia in the long run? Which is more important for the human race as a whole?
Let's get started with our last MATCHED discussion before CROSSED comes out next week! As always, questions are below.
During recreation time, Ky throws the games he plays against Xander so that he always loses. Why do you think he would he want to portray himself as an average player?
Why do you think members of the Society no longer learn to write? Is it something that happened naturally as computers and technology took over? Or was it an intentional part of the Society? Is it possible writing will no longer be taught in our schools in the future?
Melissa L wrote: "I agree with Jazmyn, one of my absolute favorite quotes from this book is:"Every minute you spend with someone gives them a part of your life and takes part of theirs." LOVE it!"
That's definitely one of the best quotes in MATCHED, because it's SO true!
Would you take the green tablet if you had access to it? Why do you think Cassia, Ky, and Xander don’t get help when Em has a panic attack at the music hall?
Were you surprised when Xander gave Em his green tablet?
Are you familiar with “Crossing the Bar,” by Alfred Lord Tennyson and “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas? Why do you think those particular poems were on the piece of paper in Cassia’s compact?
Why do you think they were not included in the Hundred Poems?
Just opened my new paperback copy of MATCHED to start re-reading and had to call out this quote, which is probably one of my favorite quotes from MATCHED, if not from the series so far:"Now that I've found the way to fly, which direction should I go into the night?...The black behind me doesn't worry me; neither do the stars ahead."
It's the second part of the quote that always gets me, this idea of not being haunted by the past, or daunted by the future.
Anyone else have a favorite quote?
We're going to take MATCHED a quarter at a time over the next four weeks, and this week is all about Chapters 1-7! Below are some questions to get us started in our discussion:
1. Do you think you could be happy being Matched? Are there any aspects of our current society that reminds you of the Matching Ceremony? Could Matching happen in our future?
2. How do you think Ky’s information got onto Cassia’s microcard? Was it intentional or a mistake? Who do you think is Cassia’s real Match?
3. Why do you think Cassia’s Grandfather gave her the piece of paper? What do you think he hopes Cassia will do with it?
