"psychological drama" was my first thought, but mystery also applies, but possibly because I haven't read the whole thing yet--the ten or so chapters I did read all had the big ???? of mystery.

I believe that the mystery genre does not require the crime solution held until the end; often, especially TV crime dramas, the perp is identified at the beginning--it is the "why that is the mystery. I'll try to think of examples, but right now a gorgeous day in the garden awaits eagerly.
