Hope you have a good trip, Jake! We will miss you. Maybe we can collectively take notes so Positron doesn't miss out...On another note, I hadn't realized that a couple of our books for the next six months are only in hardcover: Luna and Get in Trouble. I'm less worried about Get in Trouble because CPL has several copies, but there are only two copies of Luna at CPL with a long hold list already. In the past, we've avoided recently issued hardcovers since our goal is to make sure that book group participation is affordable. I know not all books will make it to mass market paperbacks and some selections (such as Elysium) aren't available at CPL, but I'd like to suggest reviewing our selections in light of availability when we meet in January.
For next month's Think Galactic, we'll be discussing works from Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements. It's a great collection and worth reading in its entirety. Any stories from the book will be fair game for discussoon, but the list below is intended to make sure there's a common ground for discussion that includes those who aren't able to read the whole book. Read these pieces, or more, or less. I'm looking forward to a great discussion!- Introduction
- Revolution Shuffle by Bao Phi
- The River by adrienne maree brown
- The Long Memory by Morrigan Phillips
- Little Brown Mouse by Tunde Olaniran
- Manhunters by Kalamu Ya Salaam
- Star Wars and the American Imagination by Mumia Abu-Jamal
- The Only Lasting Truth by Tananarive Due

If you're in Wicker Park early, some of us will be at Tamale Spaceship (1341 N Damen) for dinner starting around 6:00-ish.
Book club starts at 7:30 on the second floor of Myopic Bookstore. After the book discussion we'll be picking books to read over the next six months. See you there!
Hey all. My work is insanely busy right now so i may or may not be able to join you all :( Glad this is happening though.
Bonus story (because I forgot to add it in the original post): Dances with Ghosts by Joseph Bruchac.
So I've finally picked the stories from Mothership - Tales from Afrofuturism and Beyond for our June book discussion. Since it's a short story collection we'll focus on these ones for the discussion, but i encourage everyone to read the whole book. It's a great anthology! There were a bunchof stories by authors we've read before, but I didn't pick those so we can check out some new writers. The selected stories are:
The Farming of Gods by Ibi Zoboi
Life-pod by Vandana Singh
Protected Entity by Daniel José Older
Fées des Dents by George S. Walker
I'm looking forward to discussing. See you at Myopic on June 11th at 7:30!
so, unfortunately, i won't be able to attend the discussion this week. but i wanted to throw in a couple suggestions for consideration as you make the list for the next 6 months: embassytown by china mieville, 2312 by kim stanley robinson, rupetta by nike sulway, and atomik aztek by sesshu foster (this one might be harder to get ahold of…).i'll miss you all! have a great discussion.
In Dec 2010 i think we read Deep End from Filter House along with Jack from China' Mieveille's collection Looking for Jake. Or did that happen at a different book group meeting?
So sorry you can't go! I may go...I also have another thing that night, but am not sure which i will allow to take priority. If i do attend, i'll let you know & get you a copy of the book if no one else is doing it for you.If anyone else out there is going, let me know...i'd love some company.
hi all,on thursday we picked books for the second six months of this year... here's the list:
July: Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
Aug: Zone One by Colson Whitehead
Sept: The Lucky Strike by Kim Stanley Robinson
Oct: Flora Segunda by Ysabeau Wilce
Nov: Halfway Human by Carolyn Ives Gilman
Dec: selected stories from Paper Cities edited by Ekaterina Sedia
Gremlin will be creating events for each meeting here and I'm going to create some on Facebook. It would be great if anyone planning on going could indicate that in one or the other place so we can follow up in case of conflicts/issues.

So glad you picked some books. Very excited to discuss all of these! Also excited that I've read all of them so not having read the book won't be a reason for not showing up :)See you on the 8th!
The September book we picked back in December is "Salt Fish Girl" by Larissa Lai. Unfortunately, it's really hard to find: it's out of print, Chicago Public Library has no copies (the closest library with copies is UIUC downstate), and copies online are not cheap. In the interest of discussing a book that perhaps some of us will be able to find an executive decision was made by those of us at last month's discussion - we switched the book to Lai's other novel which IS in print (although CPL doesn't have copies of this one either), "When Fox is a Thousand."
I found a copy at Myopic that night...if you want to borrow it, let me know!
I really like the book and I'll be there. Sorry you won't. Also, a head's up...the link points to the wrong book! It should go here: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13...
