Actually, I hadn't intended to write a two-volume history, though I'm glad now it worked out that way. I wrote one very long manuscript, and after reading it and deciding he liked it, Forge editor Bob Gleason said he wanted to break it into two books. I'm particularly happy with that because it gave me more time to work on volume 2, which I'm doing today even as I take a break to post this.

As for the first part of the question, for years I have wanted to write what I hope will be the definitive history of the Texas Rangers. Judging by reviews so far, and sales, I'm hoping I have succeeded.
Best, Mike
Man, depends on how you count. I've been collecting information on the Rangers for some four decades. I've written three previous books on the Rangers, and started my current book in 1999. Was still working on last minute additions as recently as last fall. And as I write this, I'm still researching and adding material for Volume 2, which will be published in 2009 -- 10 years after I started the project!

All the reviews so far have been quite favorable, with people saying the book reads like a good novel. And sales have been going very well.
Hope you enjoy reading it. Best, Mike
