596 I live in California. Generally, most of the public libraries give residents free library cards with proof of ID and California residency (i.e. cell phone bill, cable bill). In the past two years, when I'm in different cities on my weekends, I make my way to at least one library and get a card. I check their requirements ahead of time so I don't waste a trip. I have not been turned down anytime. I've only run into them mistakenly entering my card expiration date wrong, but a phone call fixed that.
At this point, I have about fifteen cards in CA. The ones with the largest e-book and audiobook selections are City of San Francisco and Los Angeles Public Library. I also go to smaller libraries that have access to the Northern California Digital Library database. Most are on Overdrive and some libraries are switching to Hoopla or other app.
I also pay $50 yearly for Brooklyn Library and am considering Houston as others have mentioned. I trier Amazon Prime Unlimited, but they only had about 6 books of the 250 on my TBR Goodreads shelf. I canceled and they refunded the money. For as much as I read, this method, even if I were to pay the $40 yearly for Houston in addition to Brooklyn, saves me money over Prime Unlimited and Audible.
I have relatives and friends in CA and other states and we exchange library card numbers for digital content. Since there are no late fees, and it is family, I don't see the harm. We just make sure our settings are not on "automatically download" so we don't borrow someone else's book.
596 Mine have disappeared and reappeared eventually. I think it may have to do with app updates to Overdrive and my phone itself. I'm not techy enough to know, just a guess. I have an Android based phone for my audiobooks.
