I do this now. I didn't used to, but, like you, I know that some books just aren't what I can read and appreciate at that moment.Like you, I usually agonize about it, but not for as long as I used to. My turning point on all this centers on one book - Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Totally slogged through it, because I felt I "ought"'and I didn't enjoy it. Honestly now I can't remember anything about it, nor whether it might have been good if I had been in a different mindset.
I think it's admirable to admit that a book just isn't for you right then. It may never be for you. It doesn't mean that it's not a great book.
the Giant Red Pen of Logical FallaciesYou know this is our next band, right?
I haven't read much of it yet, but intend to go through it - but I want a companion book about extroverts :) From what I've read so far, it does seem that she is focusing on one particular type of introvert. Like Teresa, I'm not shy or timid, but I get EXHAUSTED from social interactions. I can even end up with some truly physical side effects if I don't get my "introvert" time to just hide away and process. Will be interested if she ever addresses THAT sort of introvert...
I am definitely still enjoying this! However, I don't think we'll be able to make the August meeting - we're away the 4th and have another commitment on the 11th. We'll miss seeing everyone!
Sounds like most people who can make it are willing to come to T-town! Am looking forward to hosting. As I said on FB, I will provide grill stuff and drinks, and knowing me, other stuff too:) Unless someone says otherwise, we'll start about 5:30 as usual.
Address is 14 Sherwood Dr, Tuscaloosa, 35401. Pretty easy to find, but just in case my number is 205-239-8191.
Who picks the next book? And are we meeting July 7?BTW, if y'all want a change of scene, I could host at my place in Tuscaloosa. I know it can be a bit of a haul, but I would love have you! House is definitely kid-friendly, and we have a great backyard for the kids to play in if it's not too stinking hot. But, I also would totally not be at all offended if everyone says it's too far. That's what I get for being friends with awesome people who don't live in Tuscaloosa :D
Will cross-post to FB!
I've chosen a quick read - "Redshirts" by John Scalzi. It just came out June 5, so no paperback yet. However, it should be available DRM-free from any eBook seller.I've been reading Scalzi's blog since maybe 1999 or so. He's been a movie critic, writer for AOL, non-fiction writer, science consultant on SG:U, and Hugo and Campbell winner, and he's currently president of the SFWA. I've read most if not all of his novels and short stories, and while maybe not literature with a capitol "L" I've found them all enjoyable and many even thought-provoking. All have humor as an essential element - hey, he started one book with a chapter-long fart joke, for goodness' sake.
"Redshirts" is his latest novel, highly recommended by geeks for geeks. Hey, it even has a theme song -http://whatever.scalzi.com/2012/05/29...
Hope you enjoy this one, and that it sparks as much discussion as "Damned" did!
Oh YUM!! I picked up a dozen ears of corn which I'll bring in a large pot as long as I can use your stove to cook them. I also may bring something made with the blueberries I got too :)
Okay, no Chris and Marcella this time. What's everyone bringing? I'm off to the farmer's market and grocery in a bit and am clueless as to what to make.
Woooo! I have a few ideas, but there is one in particular that I'm leaning towards. Will have a final pick by Saturday for sure.
I will be there with 2 kids. I'm trying to get Marcella and her new spouse to join us as well, and will let you know later today about them. We decided 5:30, right?
Got the book - do we have a date? June 8 would work better than June 1 for me (K and I leave for cubscout camp June 2) but we could do either.
I'm still out on the 12th most likely (it's Kieran's birthday). As for Pterry, skip to Equal Rites, I think - it's the first of the witches books.
I may still read it - the rate I've been going it will take as long to read the 5 as it will for him to write the next one!
