Vincent, you are correct. A LOT of liberties are taken with what was known about Conan's early life and it reads more like an alternate version of Conan's early teen years and a bit like a CW series at times with some of the inner workings and drama being played out in the story. That said, I don't really mind the read so far. I knew what I was getting into when I bought it.

I know it isn't REH canon, but I am currently reading Turtledove's "Conan of Venarium" which is interesting reading about our hero as a 12 year old. Anyone else read this one ?

I am currently on chapter VI in REH's wonderful "Red Nails" story. I have read this one numerous times and always find it refreshing and tend to always find something new and different in it upon each reading.
I did pick up Harry Turtledove's "Conan of Venarium" which features a rather young Conan. Is anyone familiar with this book ?
