66637 I just finished a very curious book called ‘The Blazing World’ written by Margaret Cavendish, the Duchess of Newcastle back in the 1600s. It’s the oldest sci-fi book I’ve read, and it was interesting to see a lot of subjects such as politics, religion, and science, being talked about by a woman of that time. If any of you is curious, you can find it on Project Gutenberg.

66637 Thought I’d share here my public domain reads, as I’m not exactly participating on any particular challenges. And I love sharing books. :D
I’ve just started ‘We’ by Yevgeny Zamyatin, it’s a Russian dystopian novel, precursor to ‘1984’ and so far it’s been very interesting.
You can find it on Gutenberg.

That's AMAZING. I don't believe that I've read 14 books in one month. My high..."

Thanks!! It's was "Sonnets from the Portuguese and other poems" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. I don't usually read poetry at all, but was looking for something for my classes and stumbled upon this, and I do have to admit they were beautiful. You can find it on Gutenberg if you'd like to read them, it's a very short book.

I've planned to read 3 books but ended up with 1.

Hopefully, the third time would be a charm, and read 3 books in March."

Crazy reader that I am, I managed to cram 14 in February. Alas, only 1 of them is a public domain book.
I'm sure you'll get to your goal soon, take your time, sometimes work and other things don't actually let us get to reading as much as we'd like. :)

Thanks Sawako and Lanelle!!! I'll check them out to see if any of those might work for class. :)

66637 I need your help, guys. I'm looking for short stories available in the public domain. But I need them like really, really short, I want to work them on a translation workshop I teach, so I need something that ideally is no longer than 1,000 words, so I can work the whole short story in class.
Would any of you know of any story that short?
Nothing religious, or romantic please. My students mostly like horror, scifi, fantasy, crime... Thanks, guys!

Oh, I've read that one also, and 'Hedgehog'. I've mostly seen Sakin in ghost stories compilations. He's good.

I know Chinua Achebe, an African author, but I'm not sure if he is in public domain yet. Maybe some of his older stories.

Thanks, Sawako! I took a peek at your scifi shelf and wrote down 3 books to eventually read. ;)

Thanks, Tim! H. G. Wells is awesome, I've read 'The Time Machine' and 'The Invisible Man', and I keep saying I'll read 'War of the Worlds' but I just keep putting it off.

66637 Hi! I heard about this group from Sawako and decided to join so I can get some recommendations. :)
My name is Carol, I’m from Mexico and my favourite genre (at the moment) is sci-fi.

To be honest, I don’t usually read public domain books. I love contemporary authors, and those are usually what I read. But ever since I became a teacher I’ve had the need to access books legally so I can share with my translation students, and so I’ve been discovering amazing books in Project Gutenberg, and recommendations will certainly always be welcome. The most recent public domain book I read was ‘Sonnets from the Portuguese and other love poems’ by Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
