Yes it's a bit grim.

The movie gave me that feeling, so I have to admit I just downloaded a sample on Kindle and just cannot get on with it.

It's one of the very few things where the movie has messed with my outlook on this so much I try but just cannot get into the book at all.

Warbreaker might be a great choice.

As he make the book available online, and also there are load of notes online from him writing the book so it's a fantastic exercise in getting into the mind of the author and see why he wrote what he did.
