You know I just read Poison Study (pretty fluffy, as far as writer's voice, but interesting premise) and it's the same thing. And you're onto it, toughness seems to come a lot of times from a place of great tragedy. I think there's different degrees, like Katniss being resilient in The Hunger Games because she needs it to survive. But now I'm going to think for a while about tough as nails heroines and what their motivation is. Can a character be realistically very resilient and tough if they didn't face some sort of "conditioning" adversity at some point?
When I was putting together my YA recommendations post on Geekquality, I found these three lists that are quite comprehensive (although I don't know when they were last updated). This is a good starting point but obviously, a personal recommendation is always best.http://tanuki-green.livejournal.com/3...

Margot wrote: "Oh I've heard good things about this!!! I do a photo series inspired by young adult books, anyone who's read it think it would be a good addition to the series?"Oh for sure! I think you'll definitely be inspired. It has a fairy tale element that's described in a way that's both beautiful, but also a little eerie.
I can't wait to hear what you think of the book & maybe see the photos you take! Do you have a link for your series for other books youve done?
Hello friends!Several of us on Geekquality staff recently read Malinda Lo's Ash, a Cinderalla story retold. We thought this would make for an easy first book for us to get started on a monthly book club. So please, join us in reading this book and the discussion going forward. You are welcome to post thoughts here, as you read the book, and we'll have a final discussion at the end of the 1 month (June 11). If you are posting while you're reading, please be sure to post spoiler warnings :)
The plot, via the GoodReads listing:
In the wake of her father's death, Ash is left at the mercy of her cruel stepmother. Consumed with grief, her only joy comes by the light of the dying hearth fire, rereading the fairy tales her mother once told her. In her dreams, someday the fairies will steal her away, as they are said to do. When she meets the dark and dangerous fairy Sidhean, she believes that her wish may be granted.
The day that Ash meets Kaisa, the King's Huntress, her heart begins to change. Instead of chasing fairies, Ash learns to hunt with Kaisa. Though their friendship is as delicate as a new bloom, it reawakens Ash's capacity for love-and her desire to live. But Sidhean has already claimed Ash for his own, and she must make a choice between fairy tale dreams and true love.
Entrancing, empowering, and romantic, Ash is about the connection between life and love, and solitude and death, where transformation can come from even the deepest grief.

Hi allCurrently, the way Goodreads is set up, in order for books we add to our "group shelf" to appear visually in the list, you must make sure that when you add the book, you include it in the "Read" shelf. We can, however, also include additional genre shelves to help sort it by topic.
Let me know if you have any questions!

In this folder, please discuss any topics related to media criticism and analysis, both recommended reading, as well as your thoughts on what could be better represented in geek lit w/r/t feminism, sexuality, gender identity and representation, race, ability, cultural sensitivity, etc. I am, for starters, keeping this as a general topic for all discussions, but as we talk, we can also create more specific discussion folders.
Pretty self-explanatory! This topic folder is for discussing any and all books that might appeal to geeks of various interests.
This topic folder is for discussing all things comic book and graphic novel, as well as anthologies that discuss the genre, biographies of various authors, etc.
This topic folder is for discussing young adult and middle grade fiction and non-fiction on relevant genres (sci-fi, fantasy, comics), as well as general conversation about the future and trends of YA lit.
This topic folder is for discussing science fiction and fantasy literature, as well as anthologies that discuss the genre, biographies of various authors, etc.
Welcome friends! We've started the group as it seems the perfect place for all of us to talk about our favorite sci-fi and fantasy books, comic books, various geeky non-fiction, as well as relevant books on race, feminism, sexuality, etc and in particular how they might relate to modern media. Please feel free to add books to our shelves and recommend your favorites. We'll also be starting a Geekquality reading group, where as many of Geekquality editors as possible will all read the same book and we'd love to involve you in the discussion.
If you have any questions about our website and what we stand for, suggestions for better settings for this group, or if you'd just like to say "Hello!" and talk about awesome books, please post!
Cheers!
