Tara wrote: "Can you rename the folder September 2018?"Yikes, what year do I think it is!? All fixed. :)
Better late than never, I hope? The theme for September is Reimagined Classics, as requested by Tara. This can include everything from fantasy reimaginings of classic works such as Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters to villain sympathetic works such as Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, and more!
Remember that once you've finished your book(s) for the month, you're welcome to share your thoughts (or just drop a link to your review!) in the thread below.
As previously stated, 2018 will be the final year of Read by Theme. (You can read more about that in April's thread.) There will be no further group polls to determine our themes; the rest of the year's themes are to be nominated by the remaining active members. The list of upcoming themes is as follows:
October: Horror
We currently have chosen no theme for the months of November and December. Anyone who wishes to request a theme for the remaining months may do so in the thread below. If there's something you want to see, make sure to speak up while you have the chance!
Thanks for the theme rec, Tara! We'll do reimagined classics in September. If anyone has any more recommendations, feel free to share in the thread below; October, November, and December still need themes!
We're into August now, and our theme for the month is Victorian Mysteries, as requested by Felicia. You may interpret this theme as you see fit. Mysteries either written during or set in the Victorian era count for this theme; they need not actually be set in a locale that experienced Victorian culture. Any mystery written or taking place between 20 June 1837 and 22 January 1901 is well within the bounds of this one.
If you absolutely cannot find a Victorian Mystery that you'd like to read, feel free to go with an adjacent era, such as Regency Mysteries or Edwardian Mysteries, or to read a Victorian book in a Mystery-adjacent genre such as thrillers, true crime, etc.
Remember that once you've finished your book(s) for the month, you're always welcome to start a discussion topic (which works best if there are others in the group who have read or are currently reading the book in question) or post your thoughts (or just drop a link to your review!) in the thread below.

Thanks for the suggestion, Felicia! Since no one's suggested anything else for August yet, we'll go ahead and do Victorian Mysteries next month. :)
We've hit July, and our theme for the month is books set in Italy, as requested by Anne.Remember that once you've finished your book(s) for the month, you're always welcome to start a discussion topic (which works best if there are others in the group who have read or are currently reading the book in question) or post your thoughts (or just drop a link to your review!) in the thread below.

Sorry, Kevin! Congrats on grad school, though! If there are any themes you'd like to suggest for the rest of the year, feel free to drop them here.

As I stated last month, 2018 will be the final year of Read by Theme. (You can read more about that in last month's thread.) The poll for this month's theme was our final group poll; the rest of the year's themes are to be nominated by the remaining active members. That list is as follows:
May: Manga, Graphic Novels, and Comic Books
June: Slavery
July: Set in Italy
We currently have chosen no theme for the months of August, September, October, November, and December. Anyone who wishes to request a theme for the remaining months may do so in the thread below. As this list has already been available for nominations for a month, these slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis; please don't nominate more than one or two themes per person (per month; if you nominated last month, feel free to nominate some more this month!). If there's something you want to see, make sure to speak up while you have the chance!
I'm so glad you've enjoyed the group, Sara, and I'm really sorry to be disappointing you this way! In looking for alternatives to this group, would you be interested in a somewhat similar reading challenge? Because the blog GirlXOXO runs a "Monthly Motif" reading challenge that is somewhat similar; you might be interested in that? Here's the link to the 2018 run of the challenge, and I'm fairly sure that they plan to run it again in 2019 and beyond.
Thanks for commenting, Anne! I'm sad to see the group close, too, but I definitely think it's time. Here's out list of final themes (so far):
- Slavery
- Set in Italy
If anyone else has any more to add, please be sure to let me know below!
Our April poll has ended, and the winning theme for the month is Social Commentary!Remember that once you've finished your book(s) for the month, you're always welcome to start a discussion topic (which works best if there are others in the group who have read or are currently reading the book in question) or post your thoughts (or just drop a link to your review!) in the thread below.
The poll for May 2018 is currently available for voting here.
Before I finish up, I also have some news for you guys. As I'm sure you've noticed, this thread is going up about a week later than it should have. At this point, I'm afraid I have to say that my offline and "real life" obligations have reached the point at which I'm finding it a struggle to fit the maintenance of Read by Theme into my schedule.
So what does that mean for the future of the group? In the past, when I took a step back from the group, I handed it over to another mod. This time, however, I think that general group participation has dwindled to the point at which it's alright to go ahead and retire Read by Theme. But not immediately! This group still has at least a handful of people regularly following the theme, so before I close things down for good, I want to make sure that everyone gets to see the themes they truly want.
Here's what I want to do. Everyone please take a look at the list of as-yet-unused themes and let me know if there's a certain theme or two that you're dying to see picked. I'd like to eschew the polls for the next few months and simply read for any themes you guys demand in the comments below, so feel free to speak up.
December 2018 is going to be the last month of Read by Theme. With the May poll already underway, that means we need to pick out seven themes to get us through to the end. So post your picks below, and if we end up with more than seven, I'll set up a final poll to choose between them. You guys have until the end of April to leave your choices in the comments below, and when I put out the May thread, I'll make the final list of themes official (or put up the necessary poll).
Let me know if you have any questions, guys, and as always, happy reading!
