A Dirty Job got me hooked, and yes, there are cross over characters as Melissa said, but that didn't stop me from loving all of his books! Have fun reading.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tom Holt yet . I found him by going through Chris's Picks on his website.

I've only read Valhalla (so far), and while it is more in a fantasy vein, he was pretty funny as well and the other books look pretty appealing (http://www.tom-holt.co.uk/comic.htm)
