At this stage in the book I think I am leaning more towards Len being the killer, or Diondra's father. I think Ben wanted to be more of aggressive, more take charge, more of what he thinks a "man" is, but I don't think he could do it, kill his mom and sisters, no. I can't really think of any books I have read that were gruesome. The true crime book, Deadly Innocencewas pretty graphic when telling the story of a husband and wife killing team.
At this point I am very interested in Ben and why he is denying even knowing Diondra. That makes me think... OK, Ben took them all out. Then I quickly go back to Len or Diondra's father, because clearly Ben can't be the killer. Then I think, maybe his sister will help him get out, find out he did do the killings and he will off Libby as the sole survivor... Then back to Len and Diondra's dad.
The most cringeworthy moment for me was the stairwell incident with Krissi and Ben. It was not only the fact that he would spend time with a child like that, but the effect Krissi's kiss had on him made my stomach turn. I love the kill club... I could see myself joining a group like this. I am facinated with how the criminal mind works and why they do what they do. There would be nothing more interesting then rehashing all the details of a grisly murder and helping to put the "true" criminal behind bars. Or at least creating alternate theories.
My favorite quotes...
"My name is Libby Day, you lying whore."
"You've got four kids, no one expects you to look like a daisy."
"Today I won't yell, I won't cry, I won't clench up into a ball like I am waiting for a blow to level me. I will enjoy today." (This may be my new mantra for daily life.)
At this point my favorite character is Libby. I love how messed up she is. I love that she spews venom, but really is still a scared little girl. She has so many different personality quirks. She is like a train wreck that I can't stop watching.
I am getting ready to begin reading. I have also learned from Gone Girl(much like Andrew), to keep my mind open!
@Andrew - Where are Michelle's favorite quotes? I am not seeing a post from her... If I am missing it, show me where to find them. Otherwise, steal her quotes because I would love to know what they are.
@Suzie - While we all have different beliefs on where the energy goes once a person dies, I wonder... If the energy took on a ghost form in order to convince Fegan to murder, where did they go once that was complete?
@Andrew - I agree with you, that line Marie used is very bitchy, if that is what the author was shooting for... Neville could have chosen a line less over-used.
I don’t think that maintaining your cover justifies murder. I am finding the corruption throughout law and the community itself, completely insane. My favorite quote was when Fegan has his pistol pressed to the back of Father Coulter’s head and said, “What’s it to be, Father? Have you the guts to practice what you preach? Or will you shut your eyes and say nothing like you always do?”
This is my favorite, because minus the gun, I have wanted to say this same thing. I feel like people that present themselves as a good, moral being – should in fact be a good, moral being. I find hypocrisy to be one of the most revolting personality traits a person can possess.
I am interested in Marie at this point. Her and Fegan seem to be on their way to building some sort of relationship, which makes me think it has to be a large part of the story.
I am enjoying this book as well. I must admit that I am not super familiar with the Irishman stereotype... Well except for Shenanigan's. Also, I know little about the IRA. There are so many characters I find myself re-reading to ensure I remember exactly how all the pieces fit together. Fegan - I believe that he is suffering from some type of mental illness. While PTSD would seem appropriate, I tend to shy away from that particular diagnosis. That is a term very easily thrown around. If he was "seeing" people and talking to people as a child, I lean more towards Bipolar or given the early age of drinking, possibly Substance-induced Psychotic disorder. From what I am gathering Fegan is most always intoxicated.
I am not comfortable answering about bias of the narrator because I do not have a firm understanding of the political aspect.
Favorite quote was Fegan speaking to Marie about her comment at the coffin, "You meant it, and you were right." A lot of people think I am "mean" or "cold" because I believe that if you are not liked while alive, there is no reason for me to pretend I liked you once you've died. I appreciate that Marie showed her true feelings, even if she did not intend to be seen.
So far, I am most interested in the ghosts. I want to know their stories and why they are "haunting" Fegan and none of the others... or maybe they are "haunting" the others and someone else will try to take Fegan out.
I have put aside the smut to enjoy Gone Girl. I have just gotten to part two! WOW!!!! I felt it was a bit slow at the very beginning, but then you quickly realize something is off... Then it is nearly impossible to put down.
