721 HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEAUTIFUL BRENDA! May you enjoy a wonderful new year leading us astray into books instead of whatever else people are expecting us to be doing! πŸ₯³πŸΎπŸŽˆπŸ“šπŸŽ‚πŸŽπŸŽˆ

721 For something completely different, have a look at We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis E. Taylor. It is mind-expanding in a most unusual way and is also out-of-this-world. Sci-fi with a moral slant and a sense of humour.

721 A View of the Woods is a 1957 short story by Flannery O'Connor that I hear haunting echoes of today in passionate arguments about "progress". Short and memorable and worth a look.

Others may have more experience, but I've listened to a couple of audiobooks on the App (on iPad) and they were fine. They're not permanent - I think you get the same time to listen to them as the for the books - 65 days after you download them. Just make sure you do that just before the archive date to get the max time."

Thanks, Carolyn. I'll be careful if I'm tempted. I seldom listen without having the text to refer to anyway.

721 I have a question about NetGalley audiobooks. I don't always read my ebooks on time, but they stay in my Kindle account permanently. I can read them whenever I want on my Kindle. I do try to be near publication time.

I haven't used the NetGalley app, and I'd like to know if that's the only way to listen to audios and how good is the app?

Also, how long do audiobooks stay accessible? I'm sometimes far behind and don't want to request something and then lose it (because I'm slack).

Yes, of course!

721 I enjoy visiting Sebastian St Cyr, Viscount Lord Devlin, in Regency England, but When Blood Lies by C.S. Harris takes place in Paris. The defeated emperor Napoleon is in exile and the royal Bourbons (the survivors who still have their heads) are back on the throne - taking advantage of the resentful poor again. Will people never learn?

721 The Peak by Aussie author Sam Guthrie is NOT an outback or mountain-climbing thriller. The Peak is a place in Hong Kong. This is about dirty foreign affairs (both diplomatic and romance) and a story of horrifying intrigue that moves between China and Australia. This author knows his stuff.

I won't unless I happen to notice them.

721 The Use of Force, a very short story by William Carlos Williams, shows a battle of tempers. It happens.

721 Aussie author M.L. Stedman's recently published novel, A Far-Flung Life, will be as opinion-provoking as her earlier The Light Between Oceans was. Is Western Australia's remoteness big enough to hide secrets? Perfect for discussions.

721 Has there been a discussion about this that I've missed? I just noticed that a bunch of my books are showing as not having READ dates. Some are showing they've been read twice, with dates only for the so-called first reading and the second one blank.

I was sorting a list by Date Read, and found these mismarked ones. I don't think I want to go through them all right now!

Anybody else noticed anything?

721 Ted Chiang writes science fiction short stories and also writes nonfiction articles about AI for The New Yorker. His Story Of Your Life combines aliens, science, and family relationships - unusual and moving.

721 The General Hospital is #3 in the Menzies Mental Health series about a fictional hospital, written by Aussies Anne Buist, a mental health psychiatrist, and her husband, author Graeme Simsion, best known for his popular books about The Rosie Project, which was delightful.

It didn't matter that I hadn't read the first two hospital books - they made it easy to pick up the connections.
