I love the voice in many of your characters. I think a deeper character development at the beginning of your novels will peak more interest in readers. I found I was drawn more to Auntie and her father's stories because of a deeper character development. I would have enjoyed further connection with Swain and Piercy had their characters developed more "meat" earlier in the novel.
Who are the motherless children?I find that many of the characters can be grouped this way? Obviously the main characters who lost thier mothers at young ages.
All the characters who were being raised by black mammies.
Many of the black characters who didn't have parental figures to protect them agaisnt the racism of the time.
What do you think of Sam Swain's decision at the end of the book?
I'd like to say that I'd go the high road and report all I know, but obviously I'm living in a different time 60 some years in the future.
