50x66 Hello, all!

Here's a nice review of Rachel Cusk's latest nonfiction book, Coventry, plus a good discussion of her work overall, particularly in the Outline trilogy phase. Also, this page has a lot of other Rachel Cusk links!

Matt, there's some discussion of her new style as a type of "women's writing," or feminine creativity, something we talked about back in the day.

Happy reading!

50x66 Love the movie, and just about every actor is ideal, I think. Maybe not Kyle Chandler for poor old Harge. He's way too sexy for Harge. But everybody else. :)

50x66 I know, right? Time to quit my job so I can read all day.

50x66 I think we all love lists of books, but one of my favorite types is lists of books that book store staff enjoy. They're all "book people," so you know they like quality stuff, but the picks are so individual -- they're not picking for the masses, they're just picking for their own quirky, geeky, slightly offbeat (or totally weird) selves. Here's a link to some great books from the Powell's staff:

Let me know what books among these you've read and would recommend!

50x66 Thanks, Lenka! It's my pleasure. I hope we will find it fun and useful. I'll see you in December!

50x66 Fun list! I'll definitely be watching the tournament in March. Maybe our book clubs can have a betting pool. :)

50x66 Thanks, Matt -- I'll add that to the pool of knowledge. If I end up reading it, I'll let you know.

50x66 If you were at the November meeting, you heard Diya talking about things that absolutely make her not want to read a book (boring, entitled white men, for instance).

I'm pretty much right there. For example, I've never read Philip Roth, never intend to. And now Lisa Halliday comes along with this book about, in part, what is essentially her affair with Philip Roth (although of course she claims not). But it's also about other things, and I'm reading really good reviews of it.

In this case, it's not just Philip Roth I'm reacting to, but her relationship with a man who was, what? Forty years older than her? And just happened to be one of the most influential personages in her line of work? That has a big ick factor for me. (OK, I've almost talked myself out of it already.)

But those reviews ... People have really been loving this book all year. Has anybody read it? Does anybody plan to? Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

50x66 Hi, everyone!

So, this is not really about Lionel Shriver's book, but you get it.... I'm so happy everybody wanted to do this. I guess I'm the moderator, but if anybody else wants to take turns, I'll gracefully abide by all election results.

I look forward to all of us sharing what we've read/seen/heard that we loved and/or hated. I hope we can also be a resource for each other when we're looking for what to read next. As a matter of fact, I'm going to start another thread with a question about a book.

Everybody enjoy, and let me know what we can do to improve our experience here (including coming up with a better name). Thanks!
