There Might Be Cupcakes Podcast Episode 91: Ten: Trekking Stubborn: Discussing ten years of being disabled and adjusting to this new life, and these new diagnoses, with a little help from Sylvia Plath . Ad-free for Patreon and Substack members.

“With luck,
Trekking stubborn through this season
Of fatigue, I shall
Patch together a content
Of sorts.
Miracles occur,
If you care to call these spasmodic
Tricks of radiance miracles.
The wait’s begun again,
The long wait for the angel,
For that rare, random descent.”
—Sylvia Plath, “Black Rook in Rainy Weather”

Story read: "The Old Nurse's Story" from 1852, first published by Charles Dickens

The one I want to especially highlight is the true crime book The Peyton Place Murder: The True Crime Story Behind the Novel That Shocked the Nation, by Renee Mallett; it's being given away by WildBlue Press, and is at the very bottom of the page. I highly recommend it; it's as much a story of the eccentric author of Peyton Place and the small town that inspired her--small towns like that fascinate me--as it is the murder that inspired her, and peculiar human dynamics at play, as well as, of course, scandal. Enjoy!

I am so excited. So many new horror novels to review on the podcast! I will keep you updated.

I hope you enjoy! I am managing the spoilers (and the storytelling) so that you can listen (and understand) even if you have never read the book. Please let me know what you think.

So. Intermingled with other episodes on other topics, for the rest of this year I am going to do a deep-dive on this book and its accompanying album, Haunted, by Mark's sister, Poe. There will be geeky horror analysis and reaction podcasting. I'll podcast as I go, and do psychology/horror/history/parapsychology/physics geek-dives ;) like I did with Stephen King's Eclipse series (Episode 19).
I'll schedule out my reading and the episodes so that this doesn't become the House of Leaves show, so that there are plenty of other topics in-between. I'll hopefully have some horror author friends on as well to discuss this book/phenomenon.
I hope this sounds fun to you! I'm pretty jazzed to re-enter the Navidson house.

In which Carla revisits the Victorian Christmas tradition of scary stories at Christmas by reading four horror classics of the era--and, in doing so, explores the not-well-known genesis of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, as well as the four-hundred-year-old origins of “Deck the Halls”. Things get silly and eerie in turn. Come sit by the fire and enjoy some cupcakes and wassail. (Original episodes from 2017 and 2018 with new content)

In which Carla shares personal stories from childhood Christmases, and shares how she and her family found cupcakes in the unlikeliest of places. These are the stories that weren't funny then, but are now. Originally aired December, 2017; now with new music.

How was your holiday season?

Also finishing up Mike Bockoven's work in progress (honored to do so, and grateful that he doesn't mind that I am being slow as Christmas--I am taking my time as an Early Reader, looking for every detail).
Tell me what you are reading, please. :)

this list is still in progress; Jared is asking for movies he missed from Shudder’s Horror Noire documentary. I am going to watch my way through the ~ 45% I haven’t seen. (I’ll link the Horror Noire companion academic book at Bookshop.org, which I have yet to read, and my Letterboxd account—feel free to follow me! 📼—in the comments.)

On the Kindle: I am reading Murder on Birchleaf Drive, by Stephen B. Epstein, about a Raleigh, North Carolina true crime case, the murder of Michelle Young, and her unborn son, Rylan, by her husband, Jason. It’s both strange and interesting to read because Michelle and Jason were both alums of my undergrad, NCSU, and active alums at that, going to football games every Saturday.
I am also wrestling with a philosophy book by the great Erich Fromm, You Shall Be As Gods: A Radical Interpretation of the Old Testament and Its Traditions. It’s intellectually difficult work, but I am enjoying the hard work.
Audio: I’m listening to my friend the horror author Chet Williamson read Clive Barker’s The Great and Secret Show. Chet, you are an amazing reader. I thought I had read this novel while at NCSU, but I think I started it and never finished it. Once I finish it, I will continue the series with Chet’s reading Everville.
Please tell me what books are comforting you or distracting you right now.
