yeah, the directing was usual Fincher: surprisingly subtle, eerie, fascinating use of space, and cinematography that is beautiful without being prettily empty.
i am not but what how was it? loved the movie (hollywood version, haven't seen the original). have not read the book.
the art in that one is a lot of fun. the writing less so, but still classic. so much sturm und drang!
re-reading Zot! Book 1 for the umpteenth time. always wonderful.bought Warren Ellis' newuniversal: Everything Went White but am holding off on it because i didn't realize it was a reconceptualization of Gruenwald's D.P. 7 Classic Volume 1 and i should probably read the later first.
although i did read Straczynski's version of Squadron Supreme before reading the Gruenwald original and it was still a good experience and loved them both. so probably doesn't matter.
forgot to come back to this thread after my post!Anthony, i'm sure many of those characters would be familiar if i had the images.
particularly The Huntress, Vision, and Emma Frost, who are all DC or Marvel regulars.
Machine Man is an obscurity but he's headlined several interesting comics.
Black Bolt is the leader of the Inhumans, who are awesome. his special power: he can't allow himself to speak! i like that in a guy. well, there's more to him than that. a great Inhumans graphic novel came out a while ago, with fantastic art. highly recommended!
High Evolutionary was a regular Silver Age foil - often a villain, sometimes more. his special power: he's Highly Evolved! plus he makes animal-people to do his bidding. what's not to like?
The Engineer is The Sexy Lady team member of The Authority. intriguing and multi-faceted powers.
Shade the Changing Man was a fascinating and seldom-used Silver Ager who was reinvented by Milligan for a great Vertigo run.
Aquarian is an obscure Marvel supporting character who has been through many changes. i first grew to love him in an arc within Marvel Team-Up. he's grown and changed substantially since then. i think his most recent power is to negate all powers. which i love.
Dead Girl is dead. the poor thing. what a life!
Booster Gold! that's surprising. i thought he was everyone's least favorite.i actually post my top 10 on my profile page, because i am that big of a nerd.
1. Machine Man
2. Black Bolt
3. The High Evolutionary
4. The Engineer
5. Shade the Changing Man
6. The Vision
7. Emma Frost
8. The Huntress
9. Aquarian
10. Dead Girl
i love Ellis, he's one of my top go-to writers, along with Moore & Morrison. Supergods was great. Planetary and Authority are my own favorites from him.
once i read The Boys, i definitely will be coming here to discuss.that said, i agree that informed viewpoints can deepen appreciation of a book. any book. seems like rather a no-brainer to me.
well after reading this, i'm thinking about seeing it. previously my perspective was that it was strictly netflix material.hey does Judge Anderson have her psychic powers in this version?
plus Cthulhu, right? Fatale is an eminent buy for me. it looks so interesting.most recent purchase was a mega-compendium of Kirkman's Invincible. i hope it's good and that it wasn't a mistake to jump in and buy the massive compendium instead of going volume by volume.
short answer: DC.i wasn't really into comics as a kid. i had maybe a half dozen that i just read and reread when the mood struck. one of them was New Teen Titans #1, which i sincerely regret giving away, sigh. i didn't really get into comics until college, when my roommate's boyfriend decided that since he was becoming a doctor, it was time to give up comics. so we were given boxes and boxes and boxes of them, and so a love affair was born. the first comic i really got into was the DC reboot of Captain Atom, which is now vaguely embarrassing to recount.
very happy to see Terry mention Ellis' Evil Fantastic 4! ah, Planetary. genius!
