I love old school style pulp fiction (ie ERBurroughs, Doc Savage, etc) I look for a lot of that, but what excites me most is something that sounds like nothing I have read before. Survival fiction is something else I look for a lot.
This year I haven't read much of anything with a lot of substance, I have just been grabbing a quick read here or there when I feel I have a moment. My favorite book this year that I have read was A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny, great author and different than his usual fare. It is written in the format of each chapter being a day in October as supernatural forces converge on a small town to determine the fate of the Earth and the Old Gods on Halloween Night.
I find I like to buy/read a mix of indie and traditional. There are a number of traditionally published authors that I love and will read anything they publish. That being said, I love finding a good indie book that isn't constrained by what publishers see as current market trends.
