8632 I should win this book because I worked at bookstores for six and a half years and never once got to go to the BEA. However, I got to unpack the boxes of books that were ordered at the BEA, because my supervisors said they had my last name on them! (It's also Bea!)
8632 I actually think that could be quite interesting. I've really only just discovered "The Hathor Legacy," (via a post on the tv show "Heroes" of all things) but I bet they have an email contact somewhere on the site. It would be worth a try, I think.
8632 I neglected to mention it when I posted the link, but that review was kind of old----posted back in 2007, which I believe was before Fire Study came out. I like Suzann's interpretation of the Commander and his/her gender identity and I'm wondering: if "transgendered" is the term for someone who switches genders completely(as opposed to a transvestite, who dresses as the opposite sex), what would the word be for someone who can do it multiple times?
I would also liked to have read the reviewer's take on the third book, but so far there hasn't been one posted.
8632 Hi all! I found a very interesting review of Poison Study (and to some extent, Magic Study) here:
http://thehathorlegacy.com/books/pois...
The Hathor Legacy is a blog looking for positive female characters in popular culture. However, I think even those who aren't interested in such things or in feminism in general will like Firebird's take on the Study series, as she has interesting views on Ixian society and on the Commander.
Enjoy!

8632 I know I've indirectly gotten a lot of people to read the series, but I don't know how many. I recommended it to a friend who works in a bookstore, who read it and liked it, ordered some copies and recommended it to customers. She said it sold a lot of copies.
Back in the day, I worked at an independent bookstore and we wrote up recommendations for the books we liked. Now I just have hope that people are reading my reviews here on Goodreads, and of course that my friends listen when I share my favorites with them. Which they usually do!
8632 One of the things I always liked about Yelena was the fact that, although she was strong, she wasn't necessarily a kick-butt heroine, but more of a survivor type. She's more resourceful than all powerful, in my book. Plus she can have a bit of an attitude, she makes mistakes, and she gets dirty. And I also think that a Mary Sue type would arrange to spend more actual time with her beloved.

8632 Gosh, I almost forgot about our extra credit assignment! Bet things are going to start hopping around here!
8632 These aren't young adult books necessarily, but a couple of books/series I've read that I would put in the same or similar genre to the Study books would be
The Aspect of Crow trilogy by Jeri Smith Ready---Eyes of Crow, Voice of Crow, The Reawakened
The Truth series ---First Truth, Hidden Truth, Forgotten Truth and Lost Truth---and the Princess books---The Decoy Princess, Princess at Sea---by Dawn Cook
Daughter of Exile and its sequel (can't remember the name---maybe Crown of Exile?)by Isobel Glass
They are all fantasies set in imagined worlds with lots of adventure and a touch (or more) or romance. And like Jane, I really like Inkheart as well.
Happy Reading!

8632 Hi everyone! I agree that this series is terrific (though the first is definitely my favorite). I'm excited to be in this group and, of course, to see what Maria will be up to next!
