I am not a poet, but I write poetry. I write poetry but don’t read it. I don’t write the lovey dovey stuff so beautifully written on Valentine or birthday cards, but hard hitting, blood and guts of war, warriors, death and destruction.
I was a soldier, but never went to war, yet I write of war as if I were there. As if I could smell the cordite, feel the blast of shell-fire and hear the whip of bullets as they missed.
For years, the vision of a soldier, seen from behind against a trench wall, invaded my drowsing thoughts. So I listened, learned, and wrote about his war – and of others. Mine was the hand that typed the words, but his were the thoughts that formed them.
He’s gone now. I remember the scene but cannot conjure up the image that was so clear for so long. His image faded and then disappeared when I published War & Remembrance, and I miss him terribly - but his work was done.
I’m sure Brian Weiss could find out who my Unknown Soldier is, or was. Perhaps he really was me - in another life.
I share this true story in the hope that others might respond with tales of inspiration.
