88463 I really liked how they didn't drip feed you the Andat concept. Rather, they gave the premise in one go and then built on it when the story required by reiterating the same thing but in more detail/different angle.

Seedless is a cracking character and I really liked Maati in places.

I'll wait untill everyones finished before discussing more plot details because spoiler tags. Lack there of.

88463 Has anyone started reading this.

I've just finished, so if you guys would maybe, I don't know, discuss anything, feel free to make a a new topic.

I give the book 3 stars, although its closer to 3.5 but falls short of a 4. Decent start and I look forward to starting the second one soon.

88463 It certainly adds another dynamic and from the synopsis and whats gone down in the opening chapters, lying and generally hiding ones true intentions seem like a helleva an asset.

I'm getting used to it, but I think the author will need to be consistant with the mechanics. So far, intead of straight up 'faking' the pose, characters tend to go with an alternate, nore vaguer one or employ what appears to be sarcasm/satire/rudeness while posing. See - Ovi Niit, the pimp Amat is working for.

I'm already liking pretty much all of the characters introduced so far, although apart from Amat most of the female characters are one dimensional or just there to move things along.

Also, aren't Otah and Itani the same person? Note - I'm 4 chapters in so this is speculation but things seem to fit.

And this place needs spoiler tags.

88463 I've read the first 4 chapters.

Chapter 5 is 10 pages long. Looks like something is gonna happen.

I can see me finishing this on the weekend.

88463 So what does everybody make of this?

At first I thought it was a strictly student/teacher thing but it appears its prevelent in the sociaty as a whole.

Maybe its just an exaggerated expression of 'body langauge' as thats the closest analogy I can find. For teacher/student dynamics (or superior/subordinate at least) Its like etiquette-fu. I'm just waiting for someone to completely lose it when the wrong spoon is used for dessert or someone forgets to hold open a door.

Also, anyone else imagine the characters getting into Shoalin Monk poses and making ninja signs with their hands while they communicate?

Ky just me then....

Maybe keep this thread so people can update their status and then have individual threads going in 5 chapter increments or when something major happens/other general discussions regarding charaters etc.

88463 I have Shadow In Summer. Looks like chapters are roughly 20-30 pages in this edition.

I've read the prologue. Glad they set things up quickly (I was dreading reading chapter after chapter of Hogwarts meets Cinderella the early years)and loved the way the Andat was explained. You get a grasp of what it is yet it(?) still maintains its aura and mystic.

88463 Lets see how this goes but 2 weeks should be enough for everyone to finish the first one. We can adjust if someone decides to pull an extended shift.

Is there anyone else we're waiting for? I think we have 4 yays so far.

88463 Yeah, put me down for chapters as well. I have the last 2 books in the omnibus edition and I should have the first 2 for next week. 99%.

Depending on how engrossing it is (I am expecting big things) I could finish this in a matter of days but around 1-2 weeks per book seems like decent 'ballpark' assignage. I'm definitely giving it the 2 book minimum grace period.

This place has spoiler tags right? Cool.
