I said, "Even today rural roads in Russia are severely testing".I tried to post a few recent pictures of major highways in rural Russia: Lena Highway, Moscow-Yakutsk Highway. I didn't work.
If you look on the Net under 'Rural Roads Russia' you'll find the same, inside minutes. They are more than severely testing.
You can only imagine how difficult land travel was 100 years ago.
I fully support the notion that these courier lines could easily have become escape lines. The courier lines were set up to get information back to Britain. Taking info from St P and Moscow to Smara would delay arrival of Information to Britain if you are going to travel overland from Samara. The Volga and the Don take you to countries where Britain had an embassy and secure comms back to Britain: that would speed the arrival of the info. I agree with the idea that it is safer - less risk - travelling by boat compared to using the roads. The roads across Russia at that time will have been anything but easy to navigate. Even today rural roads in Russia are severely testing. If you know that routes to Finland and Sweden are being closely monitored, was Samara 'Plan B'?
