50x66 I just read this book, and I wasn't a huge, huge fan, but I think it might fit in with the following books:

White Oleander by Janet Fitch
Paint it Black by Janet Fitch
Foxfire by Joyce Carol Oates
Girlbomb by Janice Erlbaum
The Killing Jar by Nicola Monaghan (although I haven't read this one yet, but it looks like it might fit with these)

50x66 I'll add this only because I've typed a list for it already. I thought In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick was pretty intense, and I couldn't put it down. In the Heart of the Sea is the tragic true story of the Whaleship Essex that was struck by a sperm whale in the middle of the pacific ocean.

While the following have mostly to do with tragic tales at sea, a few of them relate in that they are survival stories (ie. surviving the desert and earthquakes). Actually it would be interesting to read Skeletons on the Sahara after reading In the Heart of the Sea.

Other titles:

Moby Dick by Herman Melville (obviously)
Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
The Endurance by Caroline Alexander
In the Wake of Madness by Joan Druett
The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger
Skeletons on the Sahara: A True Story of Survival by Dean King
The Loss of the Ship Essex, Sunk by a Whale from the diaries of Thomas Nickerson, Owen Chase, and Others.
Isaac's Storm by Eric Larson
Caliban's Shore by Stephen Taylor
Fatal Forcast by Mike Tougias
A Crack in the Edge of the World by Simon Winchester

50x66 I lovvvedd The House of the Spirits!!

50x66 I had a patron come in looking for The Other Boleyn Girl, which of course wasn't checked in. She told me that she really enjoyed historical fiction of this time period, so here are a few authors and recommendations that I gave to her.

Guenevere: Queen of the Summer Country by Rosalind Miles
The Six Wives of Henry the VIII by Alison Weir (non-fiction)
The Lady Elizabeth by Alison Weir (fiction)
The Romance of Tristan and Iseult by Joseph Bedier (Rosalind Miles also has a Tristan and Isolde serires).

50x66 I feel like this is a book I would have read in one of my post-colonial/Carribean literature classes in college. So the following titles are books that I probably would have seen on the syllabus.

The House of the Spirits
by Isabel Allende
How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents
by Julia Alvarez
Breath, Eyes, Memory
by Edwidge Danticat
Dreaming in Cuban
by Cristina Garcia
Annie John
by Jamaica Kincaid
Wide Sargasso Sea
by Jean Rhys
