9507 I can send you the online version I received to review it. Don't tell!

9507 I loved this book, so much so, that I actually e-mailed Kathi Appelt to gush over it. She is a goodreads author and a nice lady-- she replied almost immediately.
What stands out for me is not the plotline, but the rich, descriptive writing. Although I might never read this book out loud to my sixth graders, I will certainly use it as a model for fantastic writing (and probably hook some interested readers in the process).
I understand Kerri's comments--there were times when I was sick of Grandmother Moccasin!
I was also concerned that this was the type of book beloved by teachers and librarians, but not kids. Having talked with several kids who have read it, I think it does have appeal to young readers.
As for Gayle's concerns that the content of the book might not be appropriate for younger readers, I am reminded of Old Yeller, Sounder, and other animal books with similar plot lines and themes...
