98232 Thanks Mr.Mahoney for your input on the topic. Generally, I tend to do the same, usually reading the book before laying eyes on the film. I'm sorry to hear about your bad experiences with the films you have encountered, and I do share your concerns about the future makings of certain film versions (I am praying that they make an outstanding film on "The Catcher in the Rye", one of my favourites)
However recently, many of my peers have suggested that I do it the other way, and so it's great to get different opinions from different people of varied age groups.

98232 So a debate that we all know and love is "Who came first? The chicken or the egg?"
Nowadays, with the ever increasing number of books being turned into big Hollywood films (a recent example being "The Great Gatsby"), a question that I would like to ask you guys is:
Which one do you guys prefer to do first and why? Read the novel, or watch the film?
I know that there will be a lot of different opinions and reasons, so I'm very interested in reading everyone's thoughts on the question.
Why do you read? (10 new)

98232 Many people from all age groups read for different reasons. For example, as some of the people said above, teenagers may read to relieve stress from school work and everyday life, whereas as the elderly may read to simply pass the time.

Personally, as the question is "Why do YOU read?", I read for several reasons, from elaborating on my vocabulary, implement some of the writing styles, or to simply get away "from it all". I believe that different people read for different reasons, and that not everyone's reason for reading should be the same.
