well, FD actually took this scene from a personal moment in his life when he was called on to pay a debt and the amiable character that comes in moments later is actually based off a real world person (according to his notes). Much of what he writes about comes from his very life and characters are created from people he met or knew. I love his characters because they all ahve masks, like ourselves. Your sitting and talking with someone while the other you inside is thinking and having their own conversation with sometimes opposite thoughts or feelings. Its a duality that no other author i've found has mastered like him. These aren't snippets of duality, you constantly know both parts of Raskolnkov are thinking. In other books this extend to some other characters as well; hence their length.
As I have not read this book, I can't give away much :) One thing to be said about FD is that he ocassions to have characters who themselves are not central characters but who's conversations and pontifications become central to either the character's self revelation or as a "helping hand" for the reader in order to better understand some internal turmoil the character should/is/will experience .
I think David said it well. The only other comment I would have is that people don't read quality literature often. They're stuck in the "Borne" trilogy and "the devil wears prada" etc. Not saying these are not entertaning books, but place them along side "robinson crueso", "Count of monte Christo" etc you see the simplicity in their writing. Well said david.
