I've been reading a number of articles about Boomer Lit. It seems that some authors are taking up the charge to get Boomer Lit recognized as a general genre, with other genres under it as sub-genres, such as Horror, Mystery, Romance. I understand why, if you are a Boomer Lit author, one would want the category to be accepted as a head genre, but it doesn't make sense to me. Boomer Lit refers to an age group, whether it's character ages that Baby Boomers can relate to, or story lines from a generation period described as the Baby Boomer generation. Considering that, it would not make sense to sublimate the age group of the story characters into the overall genre designation if it's, say, a horror story. Horror is already a genre, so Boomer Lit would be the sub-genre, not the genre heading with Horror as the sub-genre. I don't understand the authors that want to turn that around. It's already widely held that YA is not a recognized genre, but instead a sub-genre. The same goes with the new NA. The same should be held for BL.

What "nuggets" Angela, if you wouldn't mind expounding?

Many of the posts here include the first several lines, or the first paragraph. If it's not a good FIRST line, but only good when paired or coupled with following lines, it doesn't qualify and is moot for the topic. Maybe we need a Great First Paragraph topic?

Odd Thomas is an amazing character construction. I'm in the middle of Odd Hours (though I get little time to read it), and love the character. A fry cook...with unlimited powers of observation. He grows on you quickly.

To clarify, Nicole, the characters in Urban Fantasy are not created from any model of urban dwellers, but typically are oriented toward either Young Adult fantasy models or Paranormal Romance fantasy models. They aren't typically drawn from realistic urban social makeup, but are fantasy, usually erotic, characters dropped into urban settings, not urban culture per se. That's the typical makeup of an Urban Fantasy. There is really no crossover between what is considered the substance of Urban Fantasy and the substance of Urban Fiction. Two distinctly different variations on the urban setting. One taking the setting only, and one capturing the setting and culture to develop the scene and characters.

I've read that publishers, and some agents, look at Kirkus reviews and reviews of other similar firms for particularly exceptional book reviews. Is that true, and if so, what weight do publisher or agents give those reviews in terms of considering a self-published author's work?
